Well, none of it actually matters, since they are all (except Maelle) dream people and don't exist. It's like FF10 Zanarkand, but the whole world, and in the end everyone gets erased and you get taught a lesson about not getting lost in your imagination (or you can stay, but it's a bad ending), I feel it kinda robs the prologue of it's emotional weight with this reveal.

One thing that stands out is that the characters don't really talk to each other in the world or banter much. Monoco is fun, but you have to work for it.

The game is pretty good at doling out the character interactions with cutscenes and those random party chats. You don't want too many, because it'd distract from the visuals, music, and somber tone of the story. It's when things slow down that the characters unwind and crack a joke, the rest of the time it's being in full alert mode because they're on a suicide mission and want to make their deaths count for something.

So if every review in english and german is positive but there are 100 times as many chinese reviews that are negative, the review score that I would see would still be overwhelmingly positive.
