The game takes place a hundred years after Marathon 1. The Marathon ship didn't have FTL travel so it was also old even in the original trilogy. Lhowon was an abandoned planet full of ruins. It makes sense that everything looks gritty and old in the original trilogy because everything actually was gritty and old.
BTW UESC robots aren't even new to the series. The first game had these blocky drones.

I know, I got filtered. I played Dark Forces remaster recently and it was as good as I remember it, and I can enjoy any Doom WAD or some Doom like indie shooter right now, but Marathon is too much. You had to be there at that time to love it. Ironically, I really like Bungie's Myth games, they are my favorite games from them since I'm not a fan of Halo. And there aren't even any games right now that feel like Myth I and II.
Apex Legends is still a good game in many ways, I stopped playing because it's the same thing over and over again. The gameplay gets boring after a while. And yes, the shitty microtransactions is there, but you don't need to pay for shit you don't like.

They've pretty much made a constant joke of themselves in the writing department for 11 years straight but now they've garnered quite the reputation for having "good gunplay" so it makes a lot of sense that they'd focus on a game that's based around pure gameplay. I actually like the way it feels to shoot guns and run/jump around in Destiny so at least they've figured out their strengths and decided to focus on that. I honestly don't ever want to see any writing from Bungie ever again unless they fire their entire department and bring back the people who wrote the halo trilogy, or at least writers who were inspired by halo.

It's been said before but I think this game could've been HUGE if it was PvE only. Think of Helldivers 2 except with more carefully constructed and tight knit maps with Destiny style raid mechanics and old school Marathon lore. I think shifting focus to PvE this late in development is not realistic but a good bandaid fix is to have PvE only maps. It wouldn't be a terrible gameplay either IMO.
I wouldn't mind pvp, but it would have to be more like Halo 3/Reach's MP with variety modes and such. Don't know what the fuck they were thinking going with an extraction mode since Halo boomers don't care about that whatsoever, and I doubt Destiny players care either. It's actually amazing how much Bungie shifted from their old mentality of "MP should be fun" into "MP needs to be as sweaty as possible yet also non-toxic".
If all of that came with a pve mode like you said, it'd be a massive game and Bungie could actually have a chance at redeeming themselves. Also I really hate the idea that a pvpve shooter HAS to be an extraction mode nowadays, it's like devs don't give a shit about experimenting and creativity. You'll notice positioning matters far less than it should. Apex players are the worst with this, simply bumrushing as a team at the highest movespeed they can together instinctively. All that really matters is that you're shooting first.

Bungie is neither going after Halo boomers nor Destiny fans. Both sides are entrenched in their respective games. Halo boomers are going to play MCC/play 343 jank until they die and Destiny fans are emotionally attached to the weapons in their vaults that they never use so they will literally never switch games. Bungie has this idea in their mind that there is this untapped audience of hardcore console gamers and Steam fanboys that want to play an arcade version of Escape from Tarkov but that audience just isn't as big as Bungie thinks it is.

I don't buy that. I'm not in the alpha but supposedly the AI is actually somewhat intelligent and deadly in this game. IIRC Bungie wanted to divest and have Destiny as their "PvE" game and Marathon as their "PvP" game but they simply can't support both at the same time. It's not going to be possible because Bungie requires too much money to stay afloat.

Besides, the risen were a lot more creative in their usage of their powers than the in-game guardians so they could easily just make shit tons of solar/arc/void skills that sorta mimic the newer burns and let players mix and match them. Oh well, one can only dream of more dark age destiny material. It's the last part of the lore that hasn't been pozzed anyway, at least as of shadowkeep which was the last time I played.

1. Marathon lore is better than Destiny. Every cool lore aspect of Destiny is a shallow attempt at matching Marathon. The OG trilogy is decades old and STILL has lore discussions going on because it's just that good.
2. Destiny is poison as a brand. When I think of the word 'Destiny' I think of losing access to paid content, microtransactions up the ass, bad balancing, bad seasonal models, bad writing, etc. It's smart for Bungie to have a different IP to lean on instead of having only Destiny games.

It has its high points. I actually really enjoy playing by myself indoors - if you just stand still you can hear everything around you distinctly to the point that absolutely don't need radar, can tell if it's other players, if it's NPCs, if they're above/below, what gun they're using if they fire it at NPCs, and the indoor areas are generally boxed in but with a few paths so you can escape or set up traps at chokepoints.
But then you have to leave those interiors to reach the next one. And you can't hear people coming, and the outdoor design on Perimeter is basically made to funnel you through small highly visible areas, and every NPC will insta-aggro if they're looking even slightly your direction from a hundred meters out. It's a complete fucking shift from enjoyable and tense to dull and also frustrating.

Yes, it's an FPS made for consoles so it's not going to be impressive if you're a PC player who's used to actually having to hit your shots. When you actually have to be accurate on controller it feels like shit, since controller is shit without all of the crutches modern FPS games give them. Destiny was one of the first console FPS games that actually felt really good to play on controller, both in movement and aiming/shooting, so it's not surprising that it's known for "good gunplay" considering it was initially a console exclusive game and console FPS were on the rise around 2009-2014. To give you some perspective since I used to play a lot of console FPS around that time, many older FPS games were somewhat acceptable on controller but still felt like shit compared to m&k. If you were also a PC player at the time you'd rather just be using a mouse. The old bungie devs made up some weird sauce mix of crutches that made controller gameplay satisfying as fuck, in a way other console FPS didn't do.
Borderlands on controller feels like shit compared to destiny but on mouse and keyboard it's not even a contest that BL is superior. I don't really have a problem with any of it but I hate that PC shooters have gravitated towards copying that sauce bungie whipped up since it was never necessary on PC since we're not using thumbsticks to aim precisely.

I'm reading the words you write but they don't make sense. Destiny, halo, and other bungie games have objectively bad animations, sound, and responses. The animations are slow and floaty, the sounds are weak, and enemies bounce around when hit in ways that make them feel like inflatable dummies. The magnetisim and autoaim are bad too, because they add to the sluggish, treacle feeling of aiming on a controller by taking even more control away from you. I don't know if I just have different standards to people, it feels insane to read the shit people say when my experience playing destiny was so abominable.

Both console, but one has an extra layer of sludge in the aiming, has anemic sounds that don't propagate(okay, it's four years older, but the sounds themselves are still poor), there's no impotent feeling of shooting someone and having them just tank it without response, the guns actually move instead of being basically static in your hands. I can't make you play the games, but even just footage of the games makes it obvious that anyone saying the "gunplay" is better is just talking out their as - yet people keep fucking saying it. I wasn't, but I don't think Destiny's gameplay was truly horrible and it's not confusing to me to see why so many like it compared to the other games I listed. Even in the BF clip you posted, there's literally zero feedback from shooting someone except for a canned death animation. You don't get a big list of points popping up on the screen patting you on the back with sfx to go with it and hitmarkers and all the other stimulating shiny shit that comes with a modern FPS game.

Console FPS players like moment to moment flashy stuff, and punchy sound effects from shooting enemies. Handcannons in Destiny are regarded as one of the most satisfying guns in a console FPS to use, precisely because you just point in the general direction of the enemy and get a dopamine rush of critical hits. Funnily enough people also like golden numbers floating above the enemy's head and a unique sound effect when you're getting headshots. People like it when they hit someone with a shotgun and they get layered sound effects of the shield popping, the enemy dying, the audio of gaining points+medals and the shot itself all at the same time. The ridiculous amount of aim assist and bullet magnetism make things like flicking with golden gun on controller easy, which makes people feel really good.
Say what you want about the IP and while I don't really give a shit about it anymore, but they did a really good job at audio and visual stimulation, that's pretty much where the good gunplay thing comes from. The shooting aspect was designed specifically to give the average dick and jane a huge dopamine rush and make them feel good every time they shoot something. Like you said earlier, gears has the press x to awesome and crunchy squishy sound effects when you pop a skull, destiny has that aspect but it does it every time the player pulls the trigger on an enemy.
Oh christ, that's what they meant? I didn't even register the numbers and flashing lights, my brain just filters them out when I watch footage. Yeah, I suppose that makes sense, even if I fucking despise it. I can't really say there's any reason other than frothing hatred for this, but I don't want to include shit like hitmarkers and crit announcements in "gunplay". Such matters are kept on the "UI" side of things, in my head, and the gunplay is what you get when you turn the UI off.
Halo was always overrated and only got popular because it was baby's first FPS for a lot of literal children who had Xbox and no exposure to real FPS games like Doom, Quake, Half Life, Unreal, etc. It was not revolutionary in the slightest, FPS veterans rolled their eyes when Halo came out.

You need to understand the brain of the average FPS player to understand why Destiny ever got a reputation for good gunplay in the first place. Imagine every time you go to the casino, you pull a big lever, hit a jackpot and your brain is flooded with tons of audio/visual stimulation saying you did a good job. That's what Bungie went for in destiny every time a player shoots and kills an enemy with something like Ace of Spades where you get a headshot that makes the enemy explode then burn up, then you get a really fast and flashy reload animation then your gun is buffed and has a glow with it, along with all of the audio/visual keys that come from simply defeating an enemy jingling in your face.
I was hoping the hacks in nuBungie's writing team would know to not touch Durandal - someone who I found to be way more memorable than any modern character bungie has written, but after seeing one of his quotes in one of the trailers I'm not sure anymore.
Why even use that quote about escaping death? The runner's aren't 'escaping' anything, the live service module demands that they don't 'escape' their 3d-printed plastic shells. It's just strikes me as a shallow and vain attempt to link this game to the trilogy

Putting probably more thought into this than the writers, the consciousness in the shells is clearly deteriorating as they go through the repeated cycles of death and rebirth - the final scene is the implication that their little tokens that 'ground' them are fake, or the system doesn't even know which person they belong to. Their shit's all melting together and they exist in some form outside the physical.

All these Marathon previews have got me wanting to play through Destiny 2 again. I dropped it about 5 hours in months ago, did the game get better?
The game is in “Alpha” so I wonder how much better it will look on release. Are there any cases of a game looking kinda bad in prerelease gameplay and then seeing a massive improvement when it launched?

Outdoor lighting is most likely missing a baked lighting pass or something, or maybe the weather system stops them from doing that.
I actually like the flat look of the outdoors because stuff like Tarkov outside is way too dense in colour.

it's alpha but the game releases in 5 months, the last time something like this was on the market I think it was Anthem or some battlefield game, and even then there was no noticeable change from the alpha to the release

No the cool thing about halo was it's co-op campaign and large scale locations with focus on NPC vs NPC battlefields and vehicle traversal. This extended to multiplayer and what made maps like Blood Gulch so iconic. It was something boomer shooters couldn't offer at the time due to Halo originally being an RTS at first

It's pretty fun in a way. Definitely tests your skills you built up from playing 1 and 2. I cant help but feel like I forgot a ton of secrets after beating each level.
