Given that pokemon can exclusively interbreed with other pokemon, that nothing else can breed with pokemon, and that exclusively pokemon can breed with pokemon, it would be more sensible to claim that all pokemon share a taxological classification together rather than putting them into existing taxonomies.
If anything, it would make more sense to put them on their own branch of the Carnivora order (where cats, dogs, and bears belong) as their own family. Well, assuming you're not claiming they are also rabbits or hares as well.

Also, they've always been 3 feet tall, which is fucking massive for something shaped like a dog. Most people at Gamefreak probably didn't think too much about sizes when they were making pokedex entries.

Well they are separated into a whole bunch of egg groups. The famous pasta mentions the Field group, which is generalized as land creatures, and is the most common group type.

Ditto can breed with any of them (except for Legendaries or such) so there's an extended breeding between the whole group. And Ditto can't just breed with a random tree or human to produce eggs, so that indicates that the Pokemon are all their own group as opposed to having distant relations to one another.
Lopunny and Lucario are both 3 foot tall as well. I'd guess most people think they are human-sized, but they're both half that. Gardevoir is 5 foot tall, by comparison, so they're clearly intended to be much shorter than a person. But how many people look at Lucario and think that it's as tall as an 8-year-old?
By contrast, a Geodude is just slightly bigger than a basketball. Slowpoke is the same size as Vaporeon (3 feet tall, lying down) and Slowbro stands 5 feet tall. Hell, Slowbro is about as tall as a Charizard.
