Nothing about Joel is badly written. Maybe his death is and the characters surrounding it, but he is pretty perfectly written right until the end.
An alright gruff antihero with dead family member motivation that would've been seen as a generic dad TV schlock MC in any other medium, but we're supposed to treat him as some big serious prestige character because to a lot of critics video games have never had any narrative depth beyond Pac-Man's interstitial cutscenes and Mario getting a kiss from the princess after beating the shit out of Bowser for the hundredth time.

What's more relevant than the quick flashback of Joel is the expression on Ellie's face as she's doing that, it's not vengeful fury toward Abby, it's anguish with herself and crying because she hates what she's doing
it's more that she was working to forgive Joel rather than excise him out permanently, and thus she shouldn't do that to Abbie (and also Lev, by extension)

Question for TLOU2 haters (and trust that I do think there are valid reasons to dislike it) - why do you have such a problem with how joel was handled in 2? His getting soft over time and losing his edge seems like it's perfectly in line with his story and leads to him getting careless and killed over it. I understand that maybe you wanted Joel to john wick his way through the second game and are disappointed that's not what you got, but I don't think it's fair to call it bad writing.
There are other instances of bad, or at least boring writing in the game, but I don't think Joel is one of them.

This isn't true for TLoU, the setting has the Fireflies and FEDRA fighting for centralized authority over the whole country. You just don't see much of this in Part 2 (FEDRA has recently been removed from Seattle when you get there)

Ellie's Seattle day 2 is honestly pure kino, going all alone rampaging through WLF and Scars alike felt super badass, it almost felt like a Punisher game somehow, and the ending payoff of Ellie bludgeoning that stupid girl in the hospital was the cherry on top, I still replay it every now and then. Shame they didn't give us a Tommy DLC of the same vibe.
