I love Yu-Gi-Oh! titles for the GB, GBC, GBA, PS1 and PS2, it's from a time when Yu-Gi-Oh! was actually pretty good and fun, with the Egyptian theme and all, dark and moody, but still mostly lighthearted as you'd expect from a Shonen anime/manga, I love to play these older titles as they feel like proper RPGs, unlike the modern titles that are pretty much just competitive PvP online and stuff, playing against the CPU in a campaign with a story is where it's at for me, with cards being pretty much the way to level up like you would in a regular RPG. I love to feel like I'm saving the whole world by playing children's card games against bad guys!

I personally recommend Forbidden Memories, Duelist of the Roses, Duel Monsters 1 (GB), Dark Duel Stories, Eternal Duelist Soul, Stairway to the Destined Duel and Sacred Cards, they all capture the feel of the IP well, and are overall quite addictive to play.

Why haven't they made a new game in the style of Duelists of the Roses in over 20 years?

GX Duel Academy, the Tag Force games, and World Championship 2009, 2010, and 2011 are pretty great too.

Also Wheelie Breakers is a really fucked up oddity that I highly recommend.

The spinoffs didn't make the same numbers as a duel simulator so they scrapped them.
When they tried to do something similar after Master Duel rekindled the brand temporarily, they were so retarded about it that it flopped like crazy and they are unlikely to do anything other than the bare minimum support via freemium duel sim updates.
Early Days Collection I can't imagine was a breakout success either given its pool of games isn't very good and it isn't more than a fancy emulator.

I legitimately wouldn't be surprised if most of the team in charge of it wanted it to be a single-player game made solely to expand the brand but then some higher up said that all of the games should be about PvP and they had to force that as the focus.
Pretty much all of the game's noted issues would not have existed if it wasn't designed to accommodate four people having to be playing it at the same time. The horrible pace of the game is one, but also the main issue people had is how aggressive the gacha was - and that's mainly because the game was built for PvP. In 1P gacha games you usually want to keep players logging in regularly and having the main game mode be something that they can enjoy with whatever they might have in their account is part of that.

I think that because Rush Duel was chosen to not launch in the West (because the TCG branch thought it overlapped too much with Speed Duel) and a lot of the Western audience don't show interest in Rush Duel that Konami is fine with it being a JP-only, paper-focused game. Seeing its performance in its Western launches despite those also having mismanagement might not inspire confidence to market it more, either.

A lot of people are trying to bury their heads in the sand and say, "But Konami is saying it's raking in profits" or "muh high attendance at YCSes" while not addressing that the locals scene is the lifeblood of the game.
The Rush Duel series are both really good, not sure about viewership but they performed well in Nico ratings so for people who watched them they did well, the issue is whether or not they reached people.
If they want to market the actual game via an anime it's less important to have powerful decks and instead have fun duels. The reason people look back fondly on DM, GX and 5D's isn't because the characters were using meta powerhouses but because the duels were fun to watch. The reason why Vrains got the anime yanked from Gallop is in part because the decks were too powerful.

It's also better to just buy singles online, so why even shop at a locals if you're looking for cards? Yugioh is especially shit for adults trying to join in at locals, since pre-established cliques are always trying to fuck you over.

Theoretically it means the previous power level was acceptable or that the intention is to hit them in a way that the new support doesn't make the decks go too crazy. Also money. Money is always the bottom line. Every time in every format.

OCG doesn't seem nearly as bad as MD but they really need to curb their powercreep more and move away from the fucking Roach and all the defensive cards like Called By. It'd do wonders for Worlds also so we can stop having two entirely different metagames. TCG has for the most part accepted Mulcharmys and it has for the most part curbed retarded combo decks like Yubel. A good compromise for Roach dominated gameplay.

How are you actually supposed to play and wind Duelists of the Roses?

I've beaten it multiple times but exclusively through Pumpking, King of Ghosts- when in face up defence, he powers up all zombies (self included) by 100/100. Fuse a bunch of those and get 9999/9999 and you win.

I actually have no idea how to play it otherwise.

A lot of grinding and cheesing until you get good cards. I still remember Mai ass blasting me duel after duel when I was a kid.

The three most broken things in the game are as follows:

Field spells

Equip cards

Fusion

So build a deck around getting out powerful fusions reliably for as low a cost as possible. I'm partial to Mystical Sand zerging myself since she can be fused out for as cheap as 3 stars and female cards have really good equip spell access. Rock is also just a really good type, if you're autistic enough to grind for leader ranks they get some of the best leader abilities in the game. Mystical Elf is also pretty stupid strong in light decks if you can stack cards that flip her up and down.

Each starter generally has its own strategies to work with

My concept has gone through a hundred different iterations. It was originally going to be Yugioh in SMT style for fun, then wne the Devil Survivor/Baldur's Gate route, then went back to SMT Yugioh, and now it's a hybrid of both. It's still not a complete concept.

Purrely Horny Memory

This is one of the earlier iterations that was following the Grid-based combat style, something meant to be like Duelist of the Roses, but mixed with Baldur's Gate 3's attacking based on a grid/map system. It had some RPG Maker element icons as placeholder assets, until If figured out what I wanted things to look like and where.

Early grid map concept for what battles would look like. Monsters would gain stats and effects based on the kind of terrain tile they were on, like Duelist of the Roses. Aqua and Fish monsters would be able to surf across long spans of water tiles and such. A monster like Wall Shadow would have been able to move freely across Maze tiles.

Thanks Anon. Here, have some waifu shit. I've been thinking about two different story ideas to go along with all this. The first is just straight Monster World SMT-style Isekai stuff. The other would be set like 40+ years after the original DM story, except it would be an AU where none of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh stuff happened. Seto Kaiba became the undefeated king of the games and a miserable old man (think Batman Beyond's Bruce Wayne), where the game and the world of dueling have all evolved. It would start similarly to Yugioh GX, taking place in a Duel Academy (Felgrand Academy) for the first half. You face pic related to the ship ride there, which is one of the head duelists there. Her role is a combination of Weevil, Chaz, and Crowler.

I actually thought about treating the Monster World stuff as an arc. In the KoG Kaiba setting, he's advanced Duel Monster technology to the point where entire cities have fully integrated AI and hologram technology into everyday life. You don't need to carry around Duel Disks or any other devices. It's basically what you see in DSOD taken to the next level. A new dilemma would be created by hackers or system malfunctions where the limiters are cut off (remember when Kaiba first summoned Obelisk against his AI's BEUD? like that) and the monster AI wreaks havoc in places. What would happen if Dimension Shifter's AI became unstable and the entire city's dueling system was forced to simulate his dimension-shifting ability within a city?

I'm still working on him, but I'm at a loss as to what his skills should be. I'm trying to think of an idea for the Dark Scorpion archetype passive first and then base the skills around that. It's probably going to be something related to Trap card disarming/immunity and/or combination attacks with other Dark Scorpion members. Galatea took up most of my time with it yesterday because of all the mistakes I kept making when saving it. I ended up taking a break due to frustration. Got any suggestions? If you can suggest something that works out really well for the whole archetype, I wouldn't mind doing the rest of them after.

I can just swap out the art to make three variants with the guns, swords, and gun+sword. I can rename the skill name too. It could be something stupid like the skills giving them an advantage against traps (working with their lore for raiding tombs) and they get something like a guaranteed crit on the next attack whenever it happens. maybe...

I played the Don in Duel Links for a while with Dimension Fissure and Necrovalley. I basically sat on backrow and monsters like spirit reaper until I could clean their board to summon Don for deck destruction. I'll try to make the passive a mix of giving them an advantage against traps or some kind of resource destruction, while giving them some kind of bonus for having multiple Dark Scorpion members on the field. I thought about making Weakshot outright having his real card's effect, where it discards a random opponent's card from their hand if it crits against a monster, and always discards 1 from if its a direct attack (changing the second effect a bit). ...or maybe making the direct attack discard 2 from the deck like the original effect.

It's a bit late right now, so forgive me if it takes some time. Just know that I will get it done and and post it here.

Dzeef and Cimo are the two I was thinking of when I mentioned yugitubers being mostly people who only picked up the game in their adulthood, while TeamNinja being who I meant when I said were cringe pack openers. Both Dzeef and Cimo have made it clear many times they didn't play as kids and entirely missed out on past metas, sometimes even saying they didn't. Cimo and Dzeef will look at mirror force and say it was never good, because it hasn't been since they started playing, despite it being stupidly strong back in the day. Whenever these guys do power lists or talk about bad cards, they do it entirely ignorant of their power level back current year. It irks me because Yugioh is nothing but history.

I still remember how when I was a kid (about 5-6) my mother purchased a Kaiba Blue-Eyes deck for me (the card quality was ass and it was a pirated bootleg version though, but the foil the cards had was pretty) because I was very motived in learning how to read because of a card a friend gave me (winged dragon guardian of the fortress), and when I brought it to school during lunch/recess some kids stole some cards from me, tried to get them back and called them thieves but didn't work out lol.
At least I learned very early in life that you shouldn't show off things, and that even if you are the victim the burden of proof is on you and you should be articulate.

It's pretty fun, although it's heading into a questionable meta and bandai is waaaay too slow to deal with problem cards.

I really love DDS and TSC, the absolute dogshit cards at the start are genuinely fun, there's no other way to make a card like dungeon worm feel great but when your deck is a bunch of 500 attack shitters at best it feels like a monster. I also really like the way effect monsters work in these games, had a lot of fun with a revival jam deck in tsc buffing one up then playing the cards that let you reactivate effects to make buffed clones
