It only created the illusion of their childhood home because that's what Vergil's deepest desire really was. The illusion progressively shattering and becoming less colorful represents Urizen throwing away his humanity.

It's not really something the tree usually does. Though having Dante and Vergil lost in a maze of different past worlds when they're in hell would be pretty cool.
