It's about as grindy as you want it to be. I got through part 1 in 8 hours while avoiding most mobs.

It's a bit hard to get into without spoiling it, but the themes are IMO, of death, acceptance and inevitability. The quest is against a grand cataclysmic event, but the reality is that everyone dies eventually and be it by nuclear fire or old age we all turn to dust over time.

It's pretty melancholic and dark but it's French and that's their jam.

Most JRPGs I can think of let you save on the overworld freely, and most have save spots mid-dungeons. Also outside of optional super bosses I can't think of ones that have random OHKs, they are balanced with the thought in mind that you WILL be hit. This feels the opposite, where its intended you dodge/parry and being hit maybe lets you tank 1-2. If you swap to pure tank, I imagine these latters act 3 fights will take fucking forever unless you like cheat in max lumina to have all the passives.

It would've been a happier ending if painted Verso had just stayed dead and Maelle didn't get the paint under her eyes to show the cycle repeating, but that definitely would've gone against everything the story had been leading up to, so I respect the devs for not making a happy ending.

The Verso ending honestly isn't that bad for Alicia at the end of the day. She has better control over her painting now, and seeing the party at the end means they're still alive in her imagination. After she's gone through the grieving period she'll probably work on bringing them back in another canvas.
