It feels like a modern take on FFX, the last JRPG I played that gave me this feeling of "adventure". Plenty of great JRPGs came out since - Enchant Farm, Bravely Default, Crystal Project - but they all felt "artificial", like they had a poor excuse of a story so that they could showcase their combat systems. Which is not a bad thing at all, but I missed JRPGs showcasing their beautiful world and great characters. Xenoblade came close with its environment design, but the combat system and the writing sucked donkey balls.

Im currently bought this game because i saw it cheap and i heard it was good. I bought it out of curiosity.
Its one of the most refreshing games i played in years.
The world is exquisite it has depth and it feels fresh. Everything is built upon the new themes you see:
The bizarre and syrreal world is the perfect background for the interesting story that isnt full of cliches. The characters are all lovable AND relatable.

The gameplay, the heart of the game, is one of the best Turn- based combats i have played. This comes from somebody who played nearly every bigger Turn-based combat game in the last 15 years.
It seems simple at first but you realize pretty fast that the built variety and how you built your characters is incredible important and deep.

But around the time you get to Esquie you start unlocking more of the better passives and the AP just starts fucking FLOWING and you ahve all these effects procing on your attack. OST is good, art direction is good, story has a strong start, slogs in the middle but then has a very satisfying payoff.
Combat is alright, but absolutely no one but turbo-autists play niggas in a row games for combat.

It's a turn-based row RPG. Even with the parry/dodge system there's no point to making webms because player experience will not vary compared to a full 3D control game, how is that not obvious?

I think it's a genuinely fantastic RPG, personally. You've got action commands to make combat a bit more engaging, of course. The pictos system is really great and is sort of like a cross between FF6 magicite and Paper Mario badges. It adds a lot of freedom to build party members and isn't grindy to master pictos like in older final fantasy titles. In terms of mechanics and systems this game is easily a 10/10.
The story and aesthetics are also pretty good. It's not perfect, but it's more than serviceable. Sciel is a bit frumpy, and most of the alternate outfits are ugly so it doesn't even feel like a reward when you find a new one. The worldbuilding also feels quite esoteric. I think the game should have spent an extra hour or so in Lumiere laying groundwork so that the plot would be easier to follow.

I lived in a French colony and it’s really shitty, the British colony was far better though the Dutch or German colonies were much worse. The game is decent, it’s not perfect. It’s a bit too mushy with the story. The combat is fun, it’s turn based jrpg but you can dodge or parry enemy attacks, in fact you probably have to because endgame enemies are hard. The dungeons are alright, theh have a lot of routes and secret bosses but I hate the “wasted space” in dungeons, sometimes it’s like you need to go through a 5 minute hallway. Surprisingly there’s a lot of optional dungeons that are full dungeons which is amazing to see after the ps3/360 generation, sure they have palette swaps of the dungeon and bosses and enemies but really interesting to see. Postgame is amazing, there’s several dungeons, arenas, and superbosses too, one is really hard where you need to parry everything or die. It’s not a perfect game but it’s really good.

The story falls apart after the opera house. Atlus has games with a kino story like devil survivor or digital devil saga but I can't think of any game of theirs with a better story than e33 released in the last ten years. Remakes don't count.

The pictos that you're getting at the end of the game spiral your damage out of control to the point where you're killing bosses before they've had a chance to get a single turn in.
