So with Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim all being hundreds of years apart in one part of the world each, how are you supposed to absorb the lore inbetween? I know that Red Mountain apparently erupts between Oblivion and Skyrim which is why dunmer are scumming it up as refugees, but are you just supposed to figure what's happened in every country since the last game by reading books and talking to people who mention major events you've never heard of as if they were some 9/11? I think it's really interesting but I'm not sure where I'd go about learning what's happened to Dark Marsh or whatever between the games naturally.

The first 4 mainline games all take place in the reign of the same emperor and are at most a few decades apart, Skyrim was the very first game to be set hundreds of years after the previous, and only because the unifying element of the previous 4 (Uriel Septim) was gone.
You become aware of what happens between each game through occasional mentions of by NPCs or in in-game books: Daggerfall character backstories mention the evenrs of Arena, some books in Morrowind mention what happened in Daggerfall, Oblivion's Pocket Guide (an out-of-game lore book) and several lines of dialogue mention what happened in the six years between TES IV and III.

Don't forget even at full strength the Dunmer haven't won a war when not being hard carried by the Dwemer.

Morrowind/Oblivion

Oblivion takes place like 5 years after Morrowind, and Morrowind takes place like 10 years after Daggerfall.

Tiber Septim existed in lore in Daggerfall, it's where his Alcaire backstory comes from even, his expanded Atmora backstory wouldn't be a thing until Redguard. He just wasn't a divine yet, which is why some people like to write Talos' apotheosis as something that happened as a result of the warp in the west rather something that actually happened during Tiber Septim's lifetime

The Mede Empire is a pathetic shell of its former self, Skyrim is poor as fuck, Morrowind is destroyed, Hammerfell independant but ruined, High Rock is still lame, only the piss elf islands are still nice

I'd say only Bosmer are genuinely bad. Truly awful skill spread, manlets and their attribute spread only makes sense lore-wise, it's truly terrible for gameplay.
Low STR means bad damage, low willpower means poor spellcasting ability, low endurance means low HP, high agility means almost nothing and high speed absolutely means nothing.
The only singular positive thing I can say is having the highest light armor skill but who fuckin cares. Their highest skill is marksman which you will quickly figure out is a complete joke. Disease resist is also worthless, you can cure diseases with a low-tier spell in Morrowind.

I have some criticisms of the orcs but this is not one of them. Orsimer are definitely still "orcs" but they are pretty far from generic 'kill, loot, rape' monsters. Their rise through the games is interesting as well, I helped Gortwog the first time I played DF. They have such a weird relationship with the Empire that alone is enough to make them intriguing.

Playing a Bosmer Hlaalu archer currently and I have to agree it feels way worse than my Breton wizard or Nord barbarian in normal combat. Low strength means you have issues with carry capacity for arrows and even worse the resist common disease doesn't even account for the much more severe blight diseases like the dreaded black-heart blight. They can actually sneak unlike the other two but take a million more years to kill anything.

The Skyrim sequel was probably only going to have 3 stats/attributes (strength and combat, intelligence and magic, speed and stealth, or something like that) and now they're thinking about moving back towards the more complex system like Oblivion.
