Mgs online

saw some videos about this game, looks fun but are the online open or closed? can you tell me your opinion on this game for those who played it?
also, I saw there's a mgs online 1, 2 and 3 but don't know if this is true or I missread something I don't know.

Honestly some of the most fun online shooters. I miss it nearly everyday. Mgo 1 was good. Mgo 2 was peak. 3 was shit. There’s private servers at like savemgo or something like that.

there's no official online servers anymore?

There's been three MGO games thus far.
Literally MGO1, 2 and 3.
They were essentially the online MP modes for the MGS3: Subsistence, MGS4, and MGSV:TPP. No story, just versus, capture the flag and such, with the MGS' twist ofc.

All but MGO3 have been shut down already years ago. Anon Babble used to gather on servers and play from time to time. People wept when the servers shut down, there's videos on YT of that event.

Luckily, the community has set up "pirate servers", that you can access on the PCSX2 and RPCS3 emulators, plus on modded consoles. It requires some work and studying, but is quite easy in the grand scale of things. Finding players is trickier than zoomers might be used to, as you practically have to ask people on forums or ye olde Anon Babble if they're interested of playing with ya.

Look up "SaveMGO", and you should get the idea. I do have screenshots of the old forums still saved if you need it.

In my personal opinion, MGO1 => 2 > > > 3.
2 was essentially just an upgraded MGO1, but with the modern gear and the 2008 color scheme.
MGO3 is a bit all over the place, has regenerating health and all sorts of modern microtransanction shit.

MGO1's trailer is still one of my favorites:

PS: if you want to play co-op MGS, the Peace Walker allows doing most of the campaign with a friend, many of the main missions with up to 4 players, and majority of the side ops too.
PW also has its own Versus mode, essentially a portable MGO.
It got HD remaster on PS3 and Xbox 360, that I think still work, but don't quote me on that.
PPSSPP and RPCS3 both can play the online modes using Hamachi / Ratnik VPN and other "LAN party" tools.

It requires some work and studying

Not really. I don't have the link, but you can download a custom rpc3 emulator just for MGO, complete with ROM, and it's good to play right out of the "box"

That's neat. Didn't know about that.
Not too surprising, as I've not looked into MGO stuff in like 8 or so years. Time flies.

it was the best of times, it was the worst of times

but it was the very, very best of times

You can still play and it's still neat

I think this is the only military shooter pew pew game where wearing certain camo combinations in specific levels actually werks, without mechanical tricks- just by equiping certain visual styles and blending in

It's really funny yeah.
Wish we could play with OctoCamo more often.

I had a combi in Virtuous Vista that often worked. And it wasn't a bushy gimp suit either, just leaf camo, short sleaves and a green hat

I miss this stupid fucking game like nothing else

damn did it really work? like the enemy thought he was dead or didn't see because the camo was all grey and then he killed the enemy. thats crazy, I wish camo could work like this in other shooter

Forest maps are really good for that. I love it, too bad not enough people play them nowadays

You can play dead and it'll work once in a while but generally this camo thing works because people go fast and scan the area fast so they don't notice you. Pretty fun.

Snake also can use camo like that like in the main campaign, but it actually makes him invisible in the Snake vs All mode.

MGO 1 was peak

wonder if MGO2 can get a re-release on steam with the master collection vol. 2

cool mechanics but the netcode was absolutely fucking trash that made it unplayable because they tested it for tokyo to osaka which about as long as a single US state same as every other japanese multiplayer game released for the ps360

Desyncs are annoying but we know when they happen (throwbacks from grenades, barrels and the such) so you can more or less play around them.

ITT we larp about private servers

Ahahahahahahahahah. this makes quakefaqs look sane

You can play too if you want anon

I appreciate that you're so passionate about this game but being real why would I want to learn where the netcode shits itself for a game made by at the time a very successful company in a mode that has a fucking cash shop for items and they couldn't even get the netcode right.

japanese devs cluelessly trying to appeal to a more widespread market that gen by making a lot of shooters or gruff american man punches people games but forgetting to make sure the game is actually playable for their foreign audience is one of the big reasons why we had to deal with like an entire console gen of "dark souls is LITERALLY the only good japanese game" discourse

No you're definitely right, Japanese developers were going through a weird phase during that generation. Not all but a good amount. Outdated work culture is part of it.

Drop the discord I can't wait to be a pillar of the community.

Delusional

why japs can't into fps, what was the last fps japan made??
did mg online have micro?

I played mgo2 for years, even played a bit on the ongoing unofficial servers. It's a fantastic game that's a tiny bit marred by animation glitches some mechanics like boosting or helping people up ledges are too slow to be utilised properly. Like you can wall press but it's so slow and useless it doesn't fall in the meta of the game. The pros are it's got fantastic movement for a 3rd person shooter, great game types and a great system for setting and using skills that doesn't involve classes or any other modern dogshit like a dedicated sprint button etc. Its a rare case of a team based short round pvp game made by Japanese devs and it reflects how EU/US retarded games are soulless in comparison.

Having said all that I would say that it's not really worth getting into nowadays and couldn't really recommend it. The players on the new servers have been boiled down to either players who are so good they're still playing because it's the only thing they're good at and the most toxic retarded lovers who, in a server with like 50max players at some points, still use cheats and shit, actually care about their levels in a dead game, will boot lower players because it might mean they lose or have it effect their level, vote to restart round as soon as they die in a one life game, etc.

I'd love for it to experience a resurgence but I fear the average player is too retarded to figure out getting it when it's as simple as downloading the emulator from the site and playing. Like I dare say if it released on steam tomorrow it would blow up but here we are.

Any questions?

ITT one retard gets mad that people play and enjoy videogames

*Sips* yep us boomz0rz xD

You've got really nice rooms but still some retards around inexplicably.

The skill floor is what's really annoying, it takes some time to get the headshots right.

Sick YouTuber clips from a decade ago

Might as well jerk off about gunz the duel next. I'm sure it has private servers with 5 swaties left haha just like the good old days

i miss MGO2 every day. that last day of the official servers being up was so bittersweet. sad that i can’t find most of the photos i took in the group photo lobbies

might as well kill yourself you dumb fucking nigger

giving people what they want

ummm... no, sweaty pie :)

gunz

isn't it coming back on steam??

Poser mad

Is MGO2 hostile to newbies? Sometimes these communities get really mad if you haven't been playing for years like them.

"ummmm are the official servers up?"

PS2 and PS3 games

bro are you fucking serious

I m a believer

Not really. There's the occasional autist but most people help newbies as they can and there is a room for them (when there are enough around).

The only actual barrier to entry is the skill floor, it's not THAT high if you're not playing the tryhard action modes but it still takes a bit of time.

No one plays this shit it's a big meme.

You can fill out a few rooms with the players though.

They could all be playing MGO3 legit but they're all too busy being hipsters

I stopped playing MGO3 because it was absolutely packed with chinese cheaters.

MGO3 is shit

I fucking loved this back through 2008-12. I was the only kid in my friend group who had a ps3 and playing MW2 and black ops got pretty old fast. People here like to forget that 90% of players on any of these games had dogshit wifi setups across the entire house and no connection fidelity (myself included) so desync was part of pretty much every online game. I just learned to deal with it.

Hooked up a keyboard and fucked around in Prisonbreak RP servers and shit like that in downtime, and took part in survival tournaments when they came up. Cool things about this game

interesting game modes

SOP mechanic was actually useful if you coordinated right

skill system was kind of weird since 99% of people ran AR2, Mono, and an auxiliary skill but still cool

The bad

P2P netcode when everyone had dogshit connections in the first place

fragX controller gamers absolutely dominated since headshots were basically necessary

Put in a ton of hours playing regular sneak DM with all characters enabled. Good times.

yes. MGO2 had microtransactions. You could by clothes and shit for your character.

sorry anon I was talking about microphone. I made you replied for nothing sorry T_T. but cool to know microtransactions existed in mgo2. but yeah too bad they made it micro instead of unlock it

Some things were unlockable through tourney play. Can't remember how much of the shop you could get through it but it wasn't nothing.

it had a huge range?

online is gay and soulless I only played mgs1 on ps1

Your life is gay and soulless, kid.

Started playing again thanks to this thread, feels good

Actually you could unlock most of it, the game wasn't very predatory. You had 3 DLCs with maps, characters and tons of content. First one gave you access to competitive mode which lets you earn points through playing and winning at high levels to buy cosmetics.
