An Early Warning Flag For Bungie’s ‘Marathon’ Prospects

I’ve been up and down with my thoughts on Marathon, Bungie’s new extraction shooter currently in its Closed Alpha. I’m not an extraction player at all, but I’ve had some good runs and some bad runs. Sticking around for the long term though remains a tough prospect to see.

But I think there may be a shorter-term problem, one that has implications for its actual launch. And I’m a bit concerned about it.

Tracking the playercount of the Closed Alpha on Steam, I’m noticing something. No, I don’t care about the actual numbers at this point. This is a Closed Alpha. We know probably 80%+ of code applications have been denied. It’s too early to extrapolate things like Open Beta or launch figures that will arrive in the coming months.

But what I’m noticing is the trendline. The peak at launch is an obvious spike, up to 7K (though again, the specific number doesn’t matter). However, Thursday night dropped to less than half that. Then, as the weekend has started, Friday night lost more players, and the game is approaching less than a third of its initial players on launch day after just 72 hours. If this is the case for Saturday and Sunday night, that’s not great.

There are two other things to consider here. First, this is happening as new players are being issued codes. So more players are being let into the Alpha with at least another big code wave having gone out, but the declines still exist. Second, if you are interested enough in Marathon to apply for a code in the first place, you are probably more prone to appreciate it than the average consumer. But if interest is dropping off in time this quickly with that group…

You could use Twitch metrics here as well, as those have also dropped dramatically from launch day when a bunch of huge streamers were playing, but I find those less reliable as they fluctuate heavily based on who is online, and a big streamer or three can produce dramatic swings. But these overall trendlines are more relevant. Ideally you’d want them to stay consistent or even increase as more codes go out and the weekend progresses.

I am not saying that based on 72 hours of a Closed Alpha that Marathon is going to be a big miss. But I feel like I would be remiss to avoid saying that this is not an ideal thing to see if this is in fact representative of short-term player interest, as that has implications for both launch and long-term interest when the game launches.

This is a Closed Alpha. There is more to be added to the game by launch, there are balance patches and there is polishing to do. It is likely that the final product is more attractive and results in more interest (albeit by then you’ll have to pay for it). But the core concepts of Marathon are not changing, and the question is whether or not that will capture fans’ interest once they get their hands on it.

Update: The Saturday night peak has again fallen down from 2,500 to 1,800, indicating that this trend is continuing.

Outside of steamcharts, all the other metrics are either hidden from you by studios, or can be obsuficated to an absurd degree, like calling everything on gamepass a success until 4-5 months later when a studio mysteriously gets folded or half the devs get sacked. From everything I've seen it just seems like a woefully out of touch attempt to hop on a trend that's already died down thanks to the amount of shit additions that ended up being huge let downs. It's not entirely to say Marathon is the same as every extraction shooter, but it doesn't really stand out in its own attempt either. It's basically a watered down Apex with extraction elements instead of it being a traditional BR. Generic FPS gameplay, awful overall visuals paired with a neon saturated "woah super futuristic and punk" color palette, generic hero ability shit crossed with a poor implementation of the loot/extraction elements that doesn't really grip you.
I hate to be entirely negative about it since I do have some desire to play it, but the price tag would have to be free for me to even consider it, but that would only end up being the death of the game when rampant cheaters start playing to RMT on it.

Why do you need to pay for it when there are many similar free games? Currently it's just "extraction" part of the game serving as major selling point. If you want to play similar game but battle royal you can play Apex, if you want some classic team vs team then you can play Overwatch or Marvel Rivals, there are also military shooters without hero gimmick at all.

Besides the soviet space earth stuff I can't think of anything that felt like it had any sense of place, function or purpose beyond random mega structure alien shapes. I will admit I no longer remember which locations belong to which game and I might actually be bleeding destiny 2 content back into the first game. All I remember from destiny 2 is they went all in on the space fantasy shit, made them look like knights in space and it looked stupid.

Nope, I never got into Apex because it was a team based game. I absolutely hate when I'm forced to play with randoms in a game where they heavily effect if I'll win or lose. It's part of the reason I've stopped playing PVP lately because all shooters have turned into hyper competitive ones where I'm still at the mercy of RNG for my companions. It's not fun at all to deal with minorities, 3rd worlders, and children, especially if they control the amount of fun I'll have in a game. The sweats are a completely seperate issue, but it's an inherently shitty system in the first place. Call me back when they introduce big team shooters again.

The entire development process behind this game is awful. There’s no passion or ideas. It’s just throwing in a bunch of trends and hoping something sticks. Halo didn’t have any beta tests, it was forged and tested by the developers. But here they’re just a bunch of headless chickens begging for opinions.
