A tentative localization of the term "danmaku", which literally means "bullet barrage". It's a subgenre of shmups, so if your game isn't a shmup it can't be "bullet hell" either, a pale imitation at best in aesthetic terms if it happens to feature colored dots patterns to avoid.

"bullet curtain" is synonymous with "barrage", but I guess if you are going for maximum accuracy to the kanji then sure.

I like the style and cute girls, but they are not exactly my kind of shmup.
A bit too memo-heavy even for genre standards, like "remember the exact coordinates to stay in or get fucked" kind of memo instead of just having a general idea of where the enemies/bullets will be and some practice for harder sections.

What alternative term would you use for non-shmups that do have a bunch of projectiles littered across the screen? Bullet spam? I like to just call those bullet hell segments or whatever, even if I know traditionally bullet hell refers to games like dodonpachi.

Sure, but I'm specifically referring to those specific subsections where such bullet patterns may emerge. The overall game might be a platformer, but sometimes I stop and say "oh it's a bullet hell section" or something. Still wouldn't label the game as a bullet hell, just that section while I'm playing.

I think it's fine as long you don't tag a non-shmup game as 'bullet hell", that's going to be misleading for people who are looking for danmaku games.

It's still remembered fondly as one of the biggest names in shmups, right behind CAVE and probably on par with Toaplan. But also yeah, the gameplay style and especially their idea of difficulty is not exactly the most appealing out there compared to alternatives.
