So let's consider that the most recent jrpg darling, metaphor, was atlus' most successful game to date, and did 1mil copies in 1 day. Expedition did 1mil copies in 3 days. A brand new game from a brand new dev was able to match the best selling game from a much more established dev with a built in fanbase. That's pretty dang good.

To me, 1 million copies in 3 days is more impressive than 1 million copies in 1 day. It may seem like the latter is more impressive at first glance, but I'll explain.

Day 1 sales are based on nothing more than marketing hype: People get excited for a game and buy it on day 1 purely based on the marketing material they've seen (trailers, previews, commercials), but they haven't seen any full reviews and may or may not end up actually liking the game.

Sales AFTER day 1 are the result of positive word of mouth from people who did get it on day 1. Reviews come out, people talk about their day 1 experience, and a much better informed group of people buys the game based on good reviews and recommendations from friends and others.

So when a game sells 1 million copies on day 1, that's evidence of a very big marketing push that made people rush to buy the game based on very little information, but when those 1 million copies sell over 3 days, that's evidence that everyone likes the game so much that other people are becoming encouraged to also buy it. If a game sucks, sales will drop off immediately, but for sales to stay high over a longer period the game has to be good enough to get people talking it up, reviewing it highly, and recommending it.
