How do (You) feel about games becoming more and more reliant on the trigger buttons from 7th gen onwards?
How do (You) feel about games becoming more and more reliant on the trigger buttons from 7th gen onwards?
i feel if sony wasn't so cucked and feminized they would make it longer and more shaped like a gun trigger
it lets you perform more sophisticated maneuvers
how do you feel about games using buttons
jesus fucken christ. kill yourself OP
Games SHOULD use all the buttons on the fucking controller.
I was confused at first. I initially rebound Dark Souls controls to have attacks on the face buttons. But ultimately it doesn't really matter and I use default controls in most games.
Remember when all those 5th/6th gen shooters used the triggers to shoot? Or when action games used triggers to attack? Thought so. Faggot.
it's fine. triggers are the one thing that console games can lean into that PC games sort of can't, because every console player will have triggers but not every mustard race will. racing games, for example - triggers are far better for throttle control than 'press W'. something like the lockpicking minigame in skyrim feels better with a trigger than a mouse click.
I like it. I wish there were more buttons that were better positioned for the fingers that go underused.
I think the modern controller design that we've more or less been stuck with since the late 90s, using only the thumbs for the majority of primary actions, is very poor.
But I started with the Intellivision and 80-90s PC games with complex flightsticks. Layouts that allow you to make use of all digits of the hand is vastly superior to the thumb-dominated gamepad.
There needs to be a dramatic upset to controller designs, because they've honestly been devolving. The current xbox layout is miserable.
They've been a mainstay since 6th gen, anon.
ADD MORE FUCKING PADDLES
controllers have been too stagnant for far too long. i want hardware innovation, but it's sony and microsoft that have to change their controllers or it will never happen.
I don’t care, but I do care when games require you use ever single button combination in the world to do something. It’s fine if you play the game consecutively, but I will put a game down for a bit, play something, and come back wondering how the fuck I dismount my horse and put shit in its storage. Looking at you RDR2.
this desu, I play mostly jrpg so one handed mode is a godsend
People realized that keeping your thumbs on the sticks and letting the rest of your fingers perform different actions was better than having to move just your thumbs around constantly.
You must be some kinda pro overwatch player if you can manage 3 actions at a single moment in the space/time algorithm. It’s so much harder, definitely not something my mom could do. Even I struggle with that, I think the only time I haven’t rebound buttons away from the triggers was with cod, because I was taking my ps3 user file very seriously and had to move my camera around. Honestly, the point of using a controller is so I can plop my hemmerhoids down on my mom’s used couch instead of the gaming chair she bought me too. Just use kbm if you want to get legendary algorithms in your RPG games.
I don't feel anything anymore
Triggers are cringe.
I'm incredibly saddened that gamepads have pretty much not evolved since the ps2.
once you add paddle buttons theres no where else to go besides gyro
Same, a lot of them feel like downgrades too. I miss the pressure sensitive buttons, even though they were kind of gimmicky.
Sounds like you're triggered.
trackpads
i mean we literally have split controllers now with gyro aiming but i guess you can pretend to be ignorant
Well I can pretend that the Steam Controller was a massive success 10 years ago and bury my head in the sand but it doesn't change the reality that despites the the dualshock controllers having gyros for ages, nintendo are the only one that tried to push it in a few of their games. You can't pick up the new shitty call of duty on your PS5 and get gyro aim working. You still have to resort on aim-assist for faggots to keep playing your games and feel like they're fucking badass or something.
The only controllers that fit the bills with games designed for it are VR controllers but woops now that's gonna get a bunch of people here completely enraged by the mere mention of it.
Mouses got an upgrade. Clicking the scroll wheel to the left feels really natural. Also it comes with thumb buttons, I didn’t like the Naga that much it felt like it had so much potential but my clumsy ass could only manage to use a few buttons. I ended up using 1-3, and also the bottom left button which I could naturally feel out. They really ran with the concept though there’s tons of cool mouses to try out. I had blizzard on mb7 and it felt pretty good. Gamepad was already perfect with the ds3, probably because of military warfare using control sticks, the tech already had a huge amount of research go into it.
The only thing that's left is to improve the feel of the grips, buttons, triggers, and d-pads but none of them can get it right.
I dont use 60$ Fisher price toys made in china for over 5+ years now , cant relate
fucking this, the vast majority of controllers are made for children and it shows. I'm at the point im only using a modern duke remake because it is the only thing that actually feels right and doesnt make my hands ache from having to bend them weird to actually get a decent grip while keeping the buttons under my fingers on the thiny things after 20 minutes of playing
pic related is perfect on every level, great adjustable sitcks, decent dpad for everything but fighting game though i have a stick for that anyway, rear buttons and paddles are the right shape and placement to not be in the way when not wanted/needed. EXCEPT it's just a bit too small for adult hands, and needs to be scaled up about 15% across the board
lolwut it ate the pic of the controller i uploaded
160 dollars for something that should cost 50
no saar
don't care because any decent chinkshit can switch between trigger and button mode at this point
The newer version of this is absolute perfection imo
inb4 "it's so expensive!!"
Nothing else even comes close
This looks autistic as fuck
i got it for $40 at gamestop
how the fuck is that anything but a downgrade with those horrific paddle placements
why the fuck don't we have any genesis style dpads outside of genesis controller replicas? i got this one to emulate old shit and holy fuck i love it
To work well with every game that isn't a racing game, triggers should either be digital or let you enable fake digital with haptics like the Steam Deck does
It's different shape so nobody wants to use it.
go away 8shitdo shill
different shape
i'm talking about the dpad
i'm staying and there's nothing you can do besides pissing and shitting yourself
I have this exact mod and I had to cut a bit of the pieces touching the mechanical buttons. Having next to no fucking travel distance is a mistake and it feels like you're not really pressing anything otherwise, you have to actually hear it.
unpopular opinion
any game with paddles or extra buttons on the back grips should allow macros(both simple multuple button presses, or actual button sequences) in their companion program rather than only allowing to bind ONE button to each
Nah I want the ability to use extra inputs instead. Not binding the ones that exist which is how most of these work. At least with the steam deck (and controller 2 maybe, I don't know) anything extra is extra. It's not just binding L1 to a back button.
It would be pointless for the majority of controller-compatible games.
What's unpopular about this? At least on PC, I don't know any gamepads with software that don't allow macros on any button, let alone extra ones
There's a good number of games that support mixed keyboard and controller inputs at this point. And of course, emulators.
What emulated consoles require more inputs than what a standard controller has these days?
Emulators have extra functionality, so having extra binds is pretty useful. Screenshots, recording, rewinding, savestates, turbo without having to do any combinations, menu buttons, fucking whatever. RetroArch has a lot of those inputs. They're not required but they're good to have.
For instance on PC you're not gonna use the fucking microphone button on the dualsense for almost anything, might as well bind it to something you're gonna use. IIRC Yuzu supported binding that to something else.
I honestly don't think people who like playstation controllers are human.
Do PCs not allow you to map those buttons independently already? I know Steam lets you do it. But for consoles, it's pointless because none of the games are designed that way.
This but xbox controllers. They feel like they were made for people with tiny baby hands.
Well yeah, but who gives a fuck about consoles.
Also not really. On PCs many of these controllers still behave the same way where you can only bind the already available buttons. You can't bind them to keyboard keys. You buy one of those 8bitdos whatever and you're stuck with whatever. Valve software is aware of valve hardware so it adds extra functionality (for instance, the analogs on Steam Controller 2/Steam deck have capacitive sensors that can be used to enable gyro and are detected as such).
Do PCs not allow you to map those buttons independently already?
depends on the gamepad
on most the extra buttons only exist to copy the xinput signals
It was a mistake, all these years later and I still think the only time I actually used the triggers as triggers and not just buttons was GTA4 and 5 driving.
What's unpopular about this?
a lot of people consider it cheating
At least on PC, I don't know any gamepads with software that don't allow macros on any button, let alone extra ones
the problem is that most gamepads with software that allows macros only allows them on the face and shoulder buttons, so as example you can assing a macro to the A button, but you can't assing a macro to one of the paddles/back buttons.
the workaround is to assign a macro to the A button(as example), and then assign one of the paddles to the A button, but this defeats the entire purpose cause at that point you can just keep it on the A button and just assign a button combo(like select+A) to trigger the macro, but then more often than not that button combo actually has a purpose in game so you cant even use it
