Depends on how it's executed, I never felt Mario didn't feel like Mario when it tried edgier things in the past. And on the inverse I'd argue Mario stopped feeling like the IP when they practically soft-rebooted it with NSMB considering all of the redesigns they did to the characters and world. Alongside having no new 2D games for years prior to that game. This point of view can be taken in so many different ways and ultimately that train of thought just sounds like fear of trying new things. You will never know what will work and what suits a IP unless one tries and it just has happened significantly less with Mario in recent times. It's like how for a random example we got Mario+Rabbids, an idea people made fun of when it first leaked and people thought it made no sense but ultimately it was praised in the end for the most part.

All cities, towns, and settlements from SMRPG and the first two Paper Marios exist

Areas from mainline platformers exist(I can't be fucked to include every SMB3 or Odyssey area)

Some places from MK such as Mushroom City from Double Dash exist

Races other than Toads live in the Mushroom Kingdom. However there is something of an apartheid as goombas, koopas, and monty moles live in their designated towns and generally don't come to Toad town

Rare games, specifically Banjo and Conker and their respective islands(Isle O' Hags and Windy) exist. Dunno if the campaign will take us there

Mario married Peach and is the King of the Mushroom Kingdom, Luigi is the Sultan of Sarasaland. This is really just a way for me to explain why they aren't adventuring anymore

Sarasaland's primary citizenry consists of Dryites, Shy Guys, Ninjis, and those muai statue guys from Odyssey

Sherbet Land is a fractured land up north consisting of warring penguin tribes and Jarldoms. Including the bumpty towns from the Paper Mario games and the Snowmads from Tropical Freeze

NTA but the point is that it's really anyone's guess how much different the plot to Brothership might have been before the Mandate slapped it down. I don't think it would've been super dark or anything, but I think it's reasonable to assume that if they mentioned wanting to make Mario's design "edgier" then the plot would have also followed suit. I think it's silly to assume that the plot would have been 100% the same as it is now if they had been allowed to do the Mario designs they wanted.

And I while don't think Brothership's story is high art and is certainly flawed, your description of the plot is oversimplified, and I feel like it deserves at least a little more credit than that.

The closest thing to an 'edgy' Mario was the '93 film and I actually think there's potential in this particular version. Otherwise, a 'dark' Mario could just be a Mario game with a more serious, fairytale tone. Think Rayman 2 or even the DKC trilogy. Some things are grittier and the stakes are high but it's still lighthearted enough where it counts.

Mario & Luigi is a series with a defined visual identity, this was the first original game in almost a decade after the series seemed dead for a while and it was also the big jump to full 3D. Best to stick to the established artstyle and I think Acquire did a great job. They included plenty of original environments and characters anyway.

As for Paper Mario, there's the Iwata Asks for Sticker Star where Miyamoto told them to focus on existing Mario characters instead of adding lots of OCs. Somehow this translated almost exclusively to only characters introduced up to SMB3 which meant just Toads as friendly NPCs and the most basic enemy types. I don't think they would've been banned from adding more recent characters, see M&L Paper Jam which despite obviously being under strict restrictions as well was still able to add 3D Land enemies and the like.

Considering how much Kanabe flipflops on what they are allowed and aren't allowed to do, that makes sense to me, especially because other Mario subseries didn't seem to have the same issue. I hope TTYD's success and reception convinced them to start trying making proper RPGs with proper new worlds and characters again though.
