Absolutely peak JRPG combat and party building. Story is very barebones but if you like weird religious and mythological esotericsm baked into every other line you'll probably enjoy it.

u like pokemon?

Worst mainline SMT game, it's still an ok game on it's own though.

no

I would say, only commit you have time to play and have the right mindset. Though you can play at your own pace if you want, I would recommend that you start with Hard mode for the best experience. The game is extremely fun to play if you want a real challenge. Plus you can listen in on the kino OST while on the grind. The story is average but on the brighter side, atlus did well on the side quests and the demon haunt mechanics imo. For the protagonist, there's multiple builds out there but anything is viable as long as you know what you're doing.

at least you bought it discounted i guess.

Amazing gameplay, decent dungeons and exploration although they're nothing revolutionary, great art style, fun side quests, tons of variety in skills and builds if you play on hard mode because on easy and normal you're not really encouraged to try new stuff, top tier soundtrack and sound design in general, garbage story, useless and unimportant DLCs.

its shit
the worst thing a SMT game can be is boring and this is definitely that

the combat doesn't carry the shitty writing and presentation of everything

the only game where the law route is actually good

Unfortunately the only good turn-based RPG of the last 2 decades.

*Best mainline game

the worst thing a SMT game can be is boring

that's true for any game

nah, a game like dayz is expected to be a bit boring at times

if a game bores me i wouldn't play it. i've played other battle royale slop but usually your so engaged and focused on not dying to be bored in the first place

You already bought it why would you need opinions on it now? Just play it.

wow this mod looks cool

One of the best RPGs to come out in the past few years

arguably the best gameplay in the series but it falls short in other areas. still a really good game though.

Peak jrpg combat. I'd love for atlus to remake smt 4 duology with this combat

The original was dogshit and I got bored to tears by Vengeance. I stopped playing at the fight against Yuzuru and the dog.
Does it get significantly better after that point?

what's the best mainline smt game?

You could make an argument for 4, 3, SJ and VV

Bad game

The first Magatsuhi skill you get is the only one you need.

Original route is very boring—stick to the new one, even for your first playthrough.

Overworld can be tedious to explore.

Is Nocturne meant to be played on hard or normal? Hard right, it's always hard

only SMT game ive played but i really enjoyed it. never usually into JRPGs and never finishthem, but i finished this one.

Well yeah, it's the one that doesn't really play like a SMT and it holds your hand trough the entire thing so it makes sense.

Nocturne on hard is very bullshity but can be fun. I'd recommend playing on normal on your first playthrough

nocturne on hard is very frontloaded, by the time you get out of early game it basically turns into normal mode

and it holds your hand trough the entire thing so it makes sense.

They're all pretty easy once you clear each respective early game boss that gets meme'd

What are some good games according to you?

Persona 5, i've yet to see another game top its amazing plot

The game has like 6 endings you can play on normal first and replay game on hard once you know what you're doing.

It's a fucking great game desu.
Also you could have just played the full game using the cracked demo trick.

Is it better to do the new or old route? I heard some people say the new route has references to the old one, but new one is generally better.

Lmao

Also you could have just played the full game using the cracked demo trick.

Wasn't that for Metaphor?

nah you could only play SMTV through steam with the trick, whereas you could just torrent metaphor with the trick applied

The other guy who replied is not me lmao
But yes Persona 5 is indeed much better. There's especially SMT 4 and Expedition 33 which are incredible

The old route is so baffingly bad that no amount of references could make it worth it to play.
There's a handful of bosses exclusive to the old route but again, not worth playing

Gameplay wise it's the best game made by fatlus. Nocturne I still think has the least amount of missteps of the franchise though. If a game that combined the strong points from both was ever made it would be the best strictly turn-based jrpg of all time.

But yes Persona 5 is indeed much better

Odd take imo. I got 3 rund out of vv including a godborne run but struggled to finish the snore fest that is p5

I couldn't even play a new route of VV but I finished P5 3 times easily.

part of what makes me so fucking annoyed at SMTV is that I chose the original route when I played it because I was given the impression it was significantly different

when really the original route is just unfinished crap and the new route is really just a more complete version of it

How'd you sit through 100 hours of those dogshit cutscenes 3 times over, jesus christ

he played through P5 more than once

thanks for confirming you're a lunatic so we can discard your opinion

You play new route then replay old route on hard godborne and then finally new route again on godborne with masakado and a different team from previous godborne.

3 times

Are you starved for friends irl

DDS > VV > SJ > 4 > 3 > V

Unironically kys.

Hey I'm just masturbating to teenagers that's all

Yes

The PS5 version had some weird framepacing issues in battles. Is the PC version any better?

I still need to actually play dds but other rankings aren't far off. 4 had great plot and vibes but the difficulty fall off early game with the rest of the game being a cakewalk hurt the experience. 4a managed to remedy this

It's side quest goyslop. At the time I stopped playing, I had like 90-100 completed side quests. The game has no sense of direction or coherence to me. It was a step down from Nocturne in basically every way. If you've never played one of these then play Nocturne for the love of God.

agreed friend. Too bad I couldn't get into 4a because of it's writting. I hope for the day Atlus gives us a remaster for SMT IV with 3d models and proper difficulty.

Nocturne feels like a fever dream. Unmatched atmosphere

I fucking hate DDS. By far the most boring SMT game

side quest goyslop

discord troon buzzword

Yeah 4a has the opposite problem where playing on max difficulty feels like one of the best paced gameplay experiences in the series but the story was such a step down from 4 it was more like a cliff drop

I felt very burned out by the time I got to the end and fought Merkaba. Nocturne is just something else. Loved it

sir you must quote the man correctly

but the story was such a step down from 4 it was more like a cliff drop

imo it wasn't too bad until the girl "died", then the story became really stupid

Sex the snoko

yokowink.png - 2560x1440, 3.36M

Can't believe they went "smt3 released 18 years ago, let's turn it into a duology"

smt3 and 5.png - 1540x2556, 3.73M

4A haters are fake SMT fans, it has best gameplay in series and storyfags need to get the fuck out.

literally impossible to care about any connection between the two because they are so fundamentally different in tone

Maybe it's because 4 story felt so strong to me, especially after Yamato reactor and just the setting in general was so cool.

because they are so fundamentally different in tone

I wouldn't say that they're completely different in tone, there's some overlap and they did pretty well with ambiance and atmosphere in 5 but it's really obvious they wanted it to be the opposite to 3 in every way. From being in dungeons mostly in 3, to fields in 5. There's a lot of similarities while maintaining a yin-yang opposite approach.

it has best gameplay in series

No one said otherwise

problem I have with 4A is not the story itself but how it's told. Too much shonen power of friendship shit

i still haven't beat her boss fight and i got the game last year

I personally prefer regular 4's gameplay but I'm kinda autistic

Maybe it's because 4 story felt so strong to me,

Huh? Did we play the same game? 4's story was garbage. After a while of setting up a ton of plot threads they just drop them all. You visit a bunch of alternate universes, return, then go through your route alignment. There was hardly any cohesion whatsoever.

Fantastic game, among the best of SMT
It also had Dagda which is all you need

smt4fags are the xenoblade 2 fags of smt.

I mostly dislike V's OST but VV's new tracks are pretty damn good. Battle Qadistu is my favorite

You visit a bunch of alternate universes, return, then go through your route alignment.

Yeah I liked that

VV music is dogshit compared to Nocturne.

They're different flavors, man. You can't compare them. I like 3's music too though.

I vastly prefer Nocturne's music too.

honestly its real bad.
the only good thing is the smt monster designs and smt3 battle system, but they still fuck that up with innate demon skills that break the game.
all the maps are different colored sand.
the story is minimal and blatantly rushed where every single story npc is in the final blue sand area, when you can tell it was supposed to be entire areas.
there's 2 dungeons total.
removing random battles fucked the game hard too.
its like you're playing anime fallout rather than smt.
it did not deserve a "smt5" name and should have been a spinoff imo.

Is nocturne the only smt you played

yes, it's the only one worth playing

The Story is great, it always felt like fake drama to not let the threads die.

That's funny, VV ended up killing the IP anywyas

nocturnefag complaining about sand

Hilarious

That's funny, VV ended up killing the IP anywyas

It came out less than a year ago you disingenuous nigger

It's pretty decent, held my attention for something like 80hr playthrough, there's multiple endings etc. Story is whatever but the games focus is on combat anyway.

VV lacks the grit and dirt of the older SMT music/story/writing/setting, it has no soul, i can't feel the butthurt against god , humanity and society anymore. It's just safe shitty music for a safe shitty demographic. And it's somehow the only good RPG released in the last decade or two that's grim as fuck, give me my heretic game back

Someone selling the steelbook edition used near my home for switch, should I? Playing SMT3 on my switch atm and loving it, almost at the end. Or does SMTV truly suffer being on switch?

safe shitty music

You don't like the spongebob rave? What are you a fucking faggot
youtube.com/watch?v=OjACNTXzxOY

It's great, pure gameplay JRPG that's actually decently challenging. Really could have used some actual dungeons tho

It's good music, but horrible SMT music. VV is not cohesive with it's presentation, not like it needs to be, there's a gorillion things to do and things to pick on the map and that's what truly matters these days

bitdance.gif - 328x272, 260.82K

nocturne

muh story

SMT was only ever good for going around post apocalyptic Tokyo recruiting and fighting demons to cool music. That's all it was, will be and all it ever needed to be. The way you fags talk about old SMT would make it sound like it had some seriously deep and compelling stories with intricate character writing, which couldn't be farther from the truth.

heroes.png - 910x868, 1.03M

persona 5 was hard to get through 1 playthrough of

just beat raidou 2. haven’t played the first raidou but i’ll probably play the remaster when it comes out.

Sounded like SMT to me. My only complaint is that some of the most interesting tracks are too short, only used once or twice or used in places they don't fit the vibe of.

it's presentation

What is the best classic game and why is it Megami Tensei II

They're all worth playing

To be fair II is very mad max like.

Hard makes everything expensive

I've played through smt2, 3, 4, 4a, vv, devil survivor, sj, soul hackers and I can't think of a single game that wasn't peak or distinct in it's own way apart from the rest of the games. I can't think of a single other series that does this so consistently.

What is it with japs and fantasizing about Tokyo being infested with demons anyway? I watched picrel as a kid and only got SMT because I thought it might have been inspired by it.

has less real dungeons than persona spinoff - metaphor

Meant for

I want to get back to it but I stopped playing about half way through on hard
Exploring each zone and doing the side quests is just so boring and overworld encounters have so much fucking HP for little to no experience
I don't really get why they put in so much modern game bloat in the game when 4 already had too much of it as it was.

Go to the next zone, run around aimlessly trying to find and gather stuff, "oh look a boss!", syke, come back in 50 levels, look for the one rail that magically takes you to the place you want to go, the maps are useless for navigation. The boss fights are really good though, but that's the only enjoyable part.
I think I'll just restart on Normal.

Yeah got it set up on my steam dreck and ready to go. Just clearing some other stuff from backlog

VV is extremely tame with it's themes

I don't share the enthusiasm of DDS in this community, to me it doesn't even feel like a SMT game because there's no fusion or recruits.

Agreed, SMT a best series.

Yeah I get it's different but I really like the setting so looking forward to trying it. It's still press turn so I'm happy.

I like the game for the whole package though it is a bit more tame after SJ and 4

You are a retard. VV has the best leitmotiff use in the series. Of all the complaints, calling VV's soundtrack not cohesive is the one that makes the least sense.

VV skibidi leitmotiff fr be banger ong

bizarre esl babble.

you guys suck at games.

SMTV runs like shit on the switch.
Get it on pc if you can.

For me it's the random stuff like this, I fucking love that NIN from 10,000BC sound youtube.com/watch?v=tyjt92NgP9Y

If you like monster collection games, then you'll like it.
A lot of monsters are sexy women, and you should pick Vengance root for cute succubi girls. Plot is unimportant in this game, unless it's your first JRPG, in that case you might find something new.
Overall, it's pretty mediocre as far as JRPGs go
