I like animation based progression for fighting skills.
I like the animals' AI, especially animals going to sleep and warning you if you come too close.
I like NPC routines as well, but they're less unique to Gothic (still impressive for the time).
I like the background narrative, making the game world feel more real.

There are plenty of different healing herbs around all using the same name, and you have to actually look for the specific herb described to you.

I forgot it exists because I just clear the entire map before main quest starts so when I need the herbs they're already in my inventory.

characters don't have much dialogue yet they feel alive for their part of the story (has more reaction to the world events than most games)
combat is janky but it's still skill based and has cool animation progression (archery and magic aim locking is questionable tho)
exploration and level design are great and progression system is unique

although I dislike how shallow the lore is compared to morrowind and I wish we got Gothic 1 Expansion rather then Gothic 2 as continuation as Gothic 2 is much more generic
