I never cared for FPS games growing up, but I just played doom for the first time recently... and goddamn was it good. What the hell happened to moddern shooters? Why have they become so much fucking worse?

There's a now very old, funny video published at the time when "modern" FPSs were at their peak where the guy uses Shadow Warrior to show how old games were more focused on action. Shadow Warrior is both the peak and the bottom when it comes to retro shooters.
The first level of that game, on the highest difficulty, has more richness of approach than entire modern games, including acclaimed indies.
You'll have stealth moments with the sword, open combat, combat in enclosed spaces,you'll have to use the game's janky physics to calculate grenade trajectory arcs, you'll deal with kamikaze enemies who demand distance, their spirits who demand close contact, you'll deal with invisible enemies who blow up the entire screen in something that looks more like a boss fight that will encourage you to use the rocket launcher, etc. Sword, shurikens, Uzi (and double uzis), shotgun with two fire types, grenade launcher, rocket launcher, consumable items, all this in the first level of the game.
There's more variation in that first level than in the whole of Dusk or Doom 2016.
But although these things are great on paper, the game is utter garbage in many other respects, which makes playing it painful a lot of the time. The limitations of the Build Engine are clear there and the game, in my opinion, is unenjoyable 75% of the time.
I think Blood was made to be played on Well Done, and even then you'll have to use rather cheap approaches to the hitscanners, at least I consider the way of dealing with them to be "cheap". That's why I never really liked Blood and can't understand the cult following for that game.
For me, the ideal type of design, whether for 2D shooters or First Person Shooters, is to put the player in the middle of the action with the idea that sheer skill, prioritization, positioning, etc., is enough even if the odds seem slim. Enemies that completely decimate you in less than a second if you're in an open area don't work for this type of design.
It's easy just because it's the first area of the first map, but there are in fact more enemies in that opening area if you play on the default difficulty mode, so yes, of course OP is trolling.

If you weren't shamelessly trolling then you'd just be playing on a harder difficulty setting instead of going for gold in mental gymnastics to justify why the original post was made in bad faith.
I've beaten it on the hardest difficulty with no mid-level saves, but that's only after playing it start to finish 4 times before on each difficulty. It's hard, but definitely doable, and still fun. The levels where you spend a good amount of time underwater fighting cultists were the most frustrating.
In general though, if you feel like you need to savescum in a game, you're playing on too high a difficulty. The highest difficulties are meant for those who've already beaten the game already. In Blood especially, there's a lot of areas where it gets a lot more manageable if you know about a secret, and secrets are things you find normally through multiple playthroughs as you get used to the environments and pick up on things you didn't initially in your 1st playthrough. If you're playing a game blind on the hardest difficulty, dying a lot, and blaming cheap, artificial difficulty, that's not the game's fault, that's your fault for trying to bite off more than you can chew. Play on Easy mode and you'll have a good time as the progression won't be as brutal if you play the game again in the future on a high difficulty.

There's a big difference between meticulously save scumming constantly and just saving occasionally e.g. once per level or as often as needed to avoid a situation where you just drop the game because you don't want to waste your free time repeating an hour of shit you already did. If you're bored because you keep repeating the same shit over and over again, then it's time to make a save file no matter how hardcore you are. Video games are supposed to be fun, not boring.

It's very much possible, but pretty tedious because enemy damage and health is jacked up pretty high. As far as I remember some levels don't even have enough ammo to shoot down the enemies, so expect a lot of pitchfork action. I've heard that it's basically a difficulty for co-op mode.

All jokes aside the AR is really inaccurate, pistols are underwhelmingly low power, you cant do shit with the alien guns coz theyre too weak and high power guns like missile launcher run out in 5 shots. The driving doesnt add much to the game.
I would also claim that Elliot Rodger got the idea to shooting drive-by from the first map of Halo demo, where you shoot and kill in the island. I remember he said in the rant he was playing WoW, Counter Strike and Halo.
