I’ve seen this in one of my friends who recently tried to cut gaming cold turkey even stating “gaming isnt fun anymore” and did a little analysis with him. Of the 80 different games he played last year, over 40 were some variation of a shooter, over 20 was a variation of sports or motorsports, 15 was some AAA slop via Assassin's creed or any other open world game, and the rest were what i consider to be quality experiences.

During that era, every AAA game was either a shooter or open world slop, every indie was a pixel platformer, and AA was totally dead as a concept.
Now, AAA is live service or open world slop (and collapsing because of it), but the indie scene has seen tremendous diversification in genes and gameplay styles, and AA gaming has returned in force.
