Well, having played like 50 hours of it as of today... id say, yes it is overrated.
Is the game bad?? absolutely not, it's actually great. But i'd give it a solid 8 so far (i havent finished the game yet so maybe that might go higher or even lower).
It has an excellent combat system and graphics, but the story kinda falls off the more you go, and the world-building seems... very shallow sadly.

Rebirth because the combat is actually enjoyable and the mechanics arent as outright busted. There's more of a consistent challenge in Rebirth too - parrying and dodging requires more skill and you can get a good challenge out of trying to beat summons as soon as they appear.

I would say it depends on how many jrpgs you've actually played, it's not a bad game but it's pretty fucking mediocre and brings nothing new to the genre. I've only played it for about 8hours but any genuinely good game would have clicked by now. It's going on the back burner until I have nothing else better to play.

I've seen countless people comparing it to Chrono Trigger, FF6, and FFX which is why I asked. I've legit seen people saying it's better than those games.

The game lets you be clueless for quite a while in act 2. But just keep playing..

Exp33 is all about grief, fantasy vs reality and letting things go. The canvas is just another "dream world" that the family goes to because they cant deal with the fact that Verso is dead

FF7 wasnt about this and it was more simple, it tells the themes of loss, life and how "those who die dont really die and stay with us". But remake and rebirth are going deeper in those themes and present the themes accepting aerith death or live in delulu land. Letting aerith go and fuse with the lfistream or keep around living forever against her will. Living forever vs letting things go. All of these themes are explored between sephiroth goals and aerith goals, the dream worlds and the themes of "can/should destiny be changed".

It's Shadow Hearts tier. No more no less. And anyone who played SH knows it's not

In both games you're fighting to end a destructive cycle and discover the world and its threat isn't what you thought it was. Difference is in E33 the player gets a say at the end. But I wasn't surprised to read that the director of E33 requested people from his team to play FFX while creating their game. I see a lot of parallels

what, the temple of the ancients chapter? it was pretty good. Loved the new design and atmosphere. Loved Cloud going crazy. Loved Aerith journey to become a full fledged cetra and learning about her heritage. Loved the party having to face their past in order to get the black amteria. Loved Aerith speech about not letting your past define you, and loved Cloud brushing it off.

E33 is pretty easy to run, especially for a UE5 game, even the OG Steam Deck can do it comfortably. Rebirth is probably one of the worst examples of a UE4 game, it's insanely bloated and heavy.

In the OG you can see here and there that there was something wrong about Cloud, but nothing like what you see in Remake/Rebirth. Originally, FF7 was conceived as a thriller with investigation parts. Cloud was not decipted as a schizo half-Zack half-Sephiroth, but as a competent ex-SOLDIER that, while moving in the world etc., finds to solve problems, chase someone that continue to fade away (sephiroth) etc. Only when you reach almost the end, you can see that he has problems. In Remake/Rebirth, all the thriller/investigation part has gone for good, for "Sephiroth is already a known character, so there's no need to keep it hidden". The problem is that, if you change that, you fuck up with the core-story, that was about an investigation about who was thought being dead, while instead it is not, but you never have a real grasp about him. In Remake/Rebirth, pratically there's no need to chase anyone, and you end up just "passing by" the areas you have already seen in the OG, to hear the music and see how SE have shaped the area, for nostalgia purposes and filled with boring crap. Even the lore has been fucked up, for the Temple of Ancients was somewhere around in the Mideel area, and not in the northern continent, near the Forgotten Capital. Neither that part they have nailed on their "remake" bullshit.

FF7 remake is just more Nomura kingdom hearts-tier fanfic trash, the gameplay isn't even fun either and they take a billion years to make the parts because SE can't make games in a timely manner anymore. They haven't been able to since a long time ago, actually. They fucking suck at being productive and they love to spend way too much when they really didn't have to. I can always replay original ff7, untainted by the "modern" garbage from new producers and shill campaigns. Though the remake isn't a new thing, they've been whoring out FF7 for years before remake culture was ever a thing anyway.

To not mention that they have exaggerated the Temple of Ancient area, that doesn't look like a temple, but a fucking alternative dimension, devoiding the ambience importance that was related to it, for it doesn't look like a Temple anymore. And what they have done? In the OG the Black materia was the Temple itself. In Rebirth, there's no need for the temple to crumble, for it has nothing to do with the Black Materia. And it is not clear why the characters says that the materia that Cloud got and was keeping like Gollum kept the One Ring, was not the Black Materia, while infact it really was.

This part could have been added in any other way, avoiding on butchering and mindfucking with the player, expecially considering that people feel disoriented due to the fact that they are aware of the OG and the changes they have introduced doesn't add more to the mystery, but just confuse the people more.

Rebirth but E33 is definitely better than Remake. I think a big point for me was the hardest parts of E33, are the earliest bits in the game. You start doing 9999 so fucking early that the only "difficulty" was doing stuff way out of order or learning a moveset for the first two attempts if it even took that. I really wish they just made the entire game with 9999 as the cap in mind, and balanced stuff down to that level and evened out the curve.

Its better in the sense its a modern game with voice acting for every part, way more cutscenes and animations etc. Its like BG3 is "bigger" than Original Sin 2.

Rebirth has better everything so that one
