Download the above zip. Even if you already own the game waste your bandwidth and drive space using our complete package. You're on your own if you want to deal with manually installing.
Download the 32bit version of openjk from here github.com/JACoders/OpenJK/releases/download/latest/OpenJK-linux-x86.tar.gz and extract it into the gamedata folder . I have no clue if this is actully needed but I did it in the long process of figuring out how to get the game to work.
Movie Battles II is linux native however it requires some 32 bit libraries to run and we are going to avoid dealing with your disto's dependency juggling.
Add mbii.i386 from the gamedata folder as a non-steam game.
In steam go to mbii.i386's properies and force the "Steam Linux Runtime 1.0 (scout)" compatibility, this has all the common 32-bit libraries games need containerized.
You can add the launch option "+set fs_game "MBII" " but I dont think its needed, doesnt hurt to add it
If you for some reason need to make an autoexec.cfg the default location the game will look is .local/share/openjk/MBII. I believe you can change this with a launch option but I don't care.
If the game launches into the standard Jedi Academy main menu instead of the custom MBII menu you did something wrong and should re-read all the steps carefully before asking for help.
If you don't want steam hounding you about buying the game, delete or rename the steam_api.dll and steam_appid.txt file from the gamedata folder.

Quick tips: View and rebind your controls, almost every class will have a special ability that sets themselves apart and rebind your force power cycling key since other game modes will feature classes that have different force powers even if you dont plan on playing a saber class since Full authentic maps will have roster of characters that have "force powers" tied to them.
If you plan on playing gunner, start off with the soldier class, commander/elite trooper, or clone trooper since they come with extra lives so you can get used to the game without spending much time in spectator.
Gunner classes are unique and basically just playstyle preference with some counterplay, mandalorians on sith side are agile gunners with some tools to help deal with jedi or infantry while on the jedi side arc troopers can spec into parkour moves, utilize emp grenades to shut down SBD/droidekas, or kit out their blaster to be a sniper rifle. Or you can just go wookie and tardrage everything with fists until you get flame throwered by a commander/mandalorian.
The library is pretty decent on telling an indepth overview on what each class does and what kit they can use in Open gamemode. Also walk when you fight a sith/jedi so u dont get knocked over
