You can be a fan of a game without ever playing it...

You can be a fan of a game without ever playing it. Most people don't even have time to play video games but still appreciate them and know what they are and how it plays and everything about it without even touching it. If sports players can be fans of sports teams they don't play then you don't need to be a player to be a fan.

This is stupid because what the fuck is even a "fan"
I like omurice because it's in my weeb animes but I'll never actually eat it, is that not allowed either? Am I not a true fan?

Just because you got fired from polygon doesn't mean you make your articles here faggot.

That's retarded, are you a fan of the LoTR books because you read the cover online? Are you a fan of the Godfather because you watched a minute clip on YT? And your sports analogy is stupid because in your scenario the fans are still interacting directly with that medium.

these 5,000 people we polled in large metropolitan areas along the coasts all said Hilary is going to win

yeah dude, the people who responded to this poll have unbiased opinions

everything about it

without even touching it

Everything except what it feels like.

Watching it is one step above the entire FFVII fanbase.

'Fan' is a meaningless title to begin with so it's a nothing statement.

Most people don't even have time to play video games but still (...) know what they are and how it plays and everything about it without even touching it

Is a conflation and entirely baseless. If someone can demonstrate that you don't know what you're talking about in a specific situation, that's the end of it. Calling yourself a fan or telling them how many hours of Markiplier you've watched is irrelevant.

The same people who watch playthroughs on twitch/YT are the same people watching a podcast on another window while surfing reddit on their phone. Fucking zoomers cant stop being fish brains

You can be a fan of the story, of the graphics, but nof of the game itself.

You ok retard?

noooo you can't be a fan of a game you didnt play!!!!!

but you can be a hater of a game you didnt play tho!!!!!!

Anon Babble logic

Depends on the thing. In your case it's simple, no you aren't a fan of a fucking food if youve never had it.

Now for shit like Spider-Man and extremely extensive multimedia shit , is a kid a fan of Spider-Man despite never reading a comic book? Let's say he does read occasionally but has never read the original Dikto-Lee run is he still a fan?

jeet hands typed this

I've "played" The Witness via my friend streaming it to me while I told him what solutions to input

According to the galaxy brains on reddit you can read by listening so I don't think that's to far fetched.

datdiscordboy

moot needs to ban twitter threads

I feel like if you're THAT interested in the game you'll try your best to enjoy it in the purest form possible.
Alright if you don't have the console/a pc, I get it. Still kinda dumb though.
But if you do, you have zero excuse. Just fucking play the game.

Yeah.
You imply incorrectly that liking something and hating something require similar levels of investment.
Something needs to be good the entire way through in order for the final opinion to be that it's good, but you could find detestable things about it anywhere from the intro all the way to the ending.

The issue is that leftism doesn't care. Leftism means everyone is part of everything except if you are white or male.

Leftism means that if you grew up with lord of the rings, read all the books and wrote an entire thesis on the setting you are the same level of a fan as someone that just watched a YouTube video about lord of the rings. leftism means that if you tell someone to read the original to really grasp the material you are labeled a bigot

Yes, you can be a fan of anything for any reason.

I dunno man Hatedoms becoming more prevalent makes it seem there's a similar investment in hating something then there is at someone liking it

I think you can be a fan but you have to recognized what you consumed, you cant just say the game is amazing if the gameplay can be trash and you skipped it. You can say the story and themes are amazing since that you did experience, but its a different stance that has to be taken into account at the end of the day

Sports are the best players in the world competing. So in that sense yeah I think you could be an esports fan without playing them.

This is a bit like saying you can fall in love with someone if you've only seen pictures of them

No anon, you don't actually love that woman you just love pictures of her tits

Considering sports, we happily call someone a football or soccer fan even if they just enjoy watching other people play those games. I don't see why video games should work on different logic.

OK sure you can be, but your opinion holds less weight.

Someone who plays the game is clearly still superior, even in sports.

One of the most bizzare facts that l've learned is that most gamers don't even like playing games

I'm sure you're a huge fan of women then

Emotionally

No. You didn't fucking play it.

Logically

Soccer fans often don't play Soccer.

but you could find detestable things about it anywhere from the intro all the way to the ending.

You got poor reading comprehension, didn't play the game = not even making it to the intro

99% of sports fans just watch them and 99% of game fans just play them. You’d be changing the definition just to accommodate like 10 people that only watch video games.

You don't have to change any definitions though?

a person who has a strong interest in or admiration for a particular person or thing

random mentally ill retard on twitter makes a random retarded poll

probably got a few hundred votes (even if it's a thousand thats nothing compared to the overall scale of the world)

"welp the people have spoken durr hurr hurr"

lmao

Ok, I see your point. I guess the distinction would be a “player”

honestly, if you never played the game you can't have an opinion on it, it's like food or driving expensive cars.

I'm a fan of Roblox and Fortnite for keeping the babies out of better games

Weird comparison because Spider-Man is a character, and that character has many versions across different stories and mediums. You can be a fan of his character design and maybe some constant aspects of him, like his powers or his quips, just like you can be a fan of Cloud’s design and his buster sword.
But the question then is, if you enjoy a character’s design and traits so much to call yourself a fan, then surely you’ve engaged with some form of larger material involving that character, right?
A game is unique because it’s a composite experience of a lot of different aspects, like gameplay, music, story, etc. But I feel that those aspects combine in a way that makes it unique as a medium.
For example, if you said you were a fan of a movie, but only ever read the script and never actually watched or listened to it, is that truly appreciating it?
People who limit themselves to only watching a game aren’t truly experiencing it.
I suppose you could argue that JRPGs are usually so light on raw gameplay that watching a playthrough is similar, but you’re still missing a core aspect of the complete package, however mundane or monotonous random slow battles might be, for example.
Tl;dr fuck the people in the OP’s survey

You are pathetic. What, you couldn't beat an easy game, even with the inclusion of a mode that makes it impossible to lose? Or what you couldn't afford it even though it is available on everything from PlayStation 3 to switch to PC and it is easy to pirate? Neck yourself.
You cannot be a fan of this game without playing it yourself. You cannot have a favorite waifu or a favorite confidant because *you* did not interact with the characters and explore the dialog tree as the options were laid in front of you. You are a mentally ill parasocial freak.
Don't feed the mentally ill.
He's changing the definition to suit persona 5 fans that are too retarded to play it. I played persona 5 at the recommendation of my wife. Only the most mentally ill tiktok scrolling retard can dodge playing it. The game only takes 80 hours to beat. Compare that to how much time gamers of any age dump into meaningless but fun live service games like CoD, TF2, GTA Online, fortnite, doom etcetcetc

They just want an identity because their ego demands them to get attached to one. Being a Zelda fan or an FromSoft fan means they get to belong to a certain group and can start to behave in a certain way. It doesn't have anything to do with Zelda or FromSoft it could as well have been stamp collecting or any other hobby.

I’ll be honest I wouldn’t care if someone said they’re a persona fan and only watched it on YouTube. As far as I’m aware people only play those games for the cutscenes/dialogue anyway

80% of expedition 33 fags

lol lmao even

These are the people Atlus makes remakes for btw

making remakes for people who won't buy your game

crazy world

Streamer culture has been a disaster for the industry and we will still be reeling with its repercussions for years to come.

Most people don't even have time to play video games

But they do have time to watch full multi hour long playthroughs of video games?

I'll be honest, i'm a fan of Dragon Age Veilguard because of how absolutely hilarious all those scenes with the unibrow tranny were. I only watched webms posted here, but that was some of the funniest shit i've seen. I don't know anything else about it apparently all the other companions are gay too but the tranny is absolute peak comedy. drop and give her 10 barves...oh shit, that's right, she claims she's not a she that's another 10 barves!

Imagine your identity revolving around the fact that you use fucking Discord. I’m going to be the drink water guy.

the age of streamers fucking sucks, you have people who are really opinionated on games they never played and just parrot whatever streamer they watched said
I remember MiSide having a massive following from people who never played it and yet made entire fics and fanart despite knowing next to nothing about it

watch full multi hour long playthroughs

they listen to it while at school, work, or scrolling their favorite social media of choice

Yeah, you can be. Question is: is it really wise to decide to go to bat for something that you have never experienced yourself? At best second hand through another person?

is it really wise to decide to go to bat for something that you have never experienced yourself?

They are desperate for an identity for some reason. They can't stand not having one. Being a "gamer" fills a need even if they don't like playing games.

Well, being a gamer doesn't take much. At the very least playing games, and it's not like we have a shortage here.

Hm, thinking about it, mobile gaming is still rather limited, isn't it? It lends itself more to arcade like games in my opinion. I know the GTA 3 series got mobile ports, but I just cannot grasp how or why you'd play it on a mobile device not specifically made for video games.

being a gamer doesn't take much. At the very least playing games

They don't like playing games. They want be gamers, the identity/social experience. Different things.

I have yet to meet a self-proclaimed gamer really into that 'culture' who does not play at least one game. Be it something mainstream or not.

i'll go even further twater thread nigger op.
Back in the day of game magazines, they had extensive guides about games. I've read several times the SH2 one, becoming one of my favorites games despite never playing it.
Thanks for reading my blog.
