Nah fourth and fifth panel are integral because the contrast is what causes the humor (facial expression change, big brain mode, etc). If anything the first panel is less necessary, because if you see a guy rolling a d20 it's obvious what the context is.

2-4-5 may in fact be the optimal panel structure for the comic because it has no words yet conveys everything important.

Fable lore was cool enough to get me to build my own system and campaign for it. Most wouldn't like the system though since I designed it to be as simple as possible. The goal was to be able to get people who have never played a tabletop RPG into the game in 5-10 minutes. The rules can be written on a recipe card.

Why would it be an athletics check when the initial check to see if you CAN fuck it should realistically be Diplomacy? Success means you convince the Dragon to fuck, though a separate roll should be required for performance, using Athletics or Sleight of Hand with the attribute modifier being substituted for Charisma or Constitution, with both skill and attribute being player's choice.
Following a successful roll there, THEN you could do a pure Constitution check to see how many rounds they did with the dragon for bragging rights.

a 3 int barb can hit a 20 but the results he gets will be wildly different than a 12 from someone proficient and skilled enough to actually decipher it. The barb should get something like the ancient copper negative review on a 20 that was simply made the fuck up and completely wrong, but no one gets any indication that it was actually wrong. If the players trust it simply because it was a 20 roll then that's their problem.

Modifiers can be used for obvious things like strength tests but for something like attempting to decipher an unknown tablet that cannot provide an absolute yes or no answer to if you actually succeeded or failed shouldn't give the players any indication either.

Let's say a rogue with language skills sees the runes first, and wants to decipher them. He fails since the runes are in no language he's ever heard of. The then calls the wizard over to see if he can make sense of them. Turns out he can, since those are actually magical sigils for a binding spell or something. That's a lot more engaging than just telling your wizard player to go to that specific pillar yourself.

If they fail that check, proceed to combat and require players to find some means of either Grappling the dragon (As per rules, you cannot normally grapple creatures more than 1 size category larger than you) or applying incapacitated some other way. At that point though, it wouldn't be a skill check it would be a contest, you rolling against the dragon who could also try breaking free every round.
At that point I'd say either Athletics or Sleight of Hand contested against the Dragons Con or Will save, with every X times someone loses, they receive a stack of exhaustion. House rule that if the raped get 6 exhaustion this way, instead of dying they mind break into enjoying it.

Modern DND has ruined so many peoples perception of TTRPG's. This isn't even how skillchecks work. Nat 20 doesn't and should not guarantee a success, there HAVE to be limits and things your players simply cannot do but this is almost entirely how DND 5E is built, its basically impossible to fail or die in that system. Last game I played was officially Pathfinder, but I was allowed to port over a 3.5 artificer. Pretty fun mixing it up in modules.

Pathfinder 1E is literally just an extension of 3.5 and is made to be fully backwards compatible so if you want to play 3.5 you can use Pathfinder 1E things and there is a gigantic amount of content available to you which is what a lot of people do.

It's for a house rule. Typically, for skill checks, if you roll a 20 on die, you add your modifiers and announce the sum. Sometimes it's easier to just say nat20 if your GM knows your skills(he should).
Every GM worth their salt should skim over the player's sheets real quick before each session to refamiliarize themselves with the characters.
Anyway, if a player calls out nat20, that's usually exceeds any given skill check for their level, but sometimes it doesn't, so the GM still asks them for their sum. They may still fail.

I usually house rule nat 20 skill checks as well. For example if a character gets a nat 20 on a stealth roll they are so sneaky they lose themselves. Roll a new character. If they get a nat 20 on an athleticism check they backfilp into space and suffocate. Roll a new character.

As a fellow forever GM of about 15 years as well, I would love to play in your games from the sounds of it. The few times I get to play, it always feels like the GM is holding everyone's hand and never actually giving us any challenge or agency.
