Much like Jazz Jackrabbit, you have an annoying amount of collectables and having a pointless score system was something that was out phased by the time the last Commander Keen game came out.

Gex was competing with Sonic 3, SMW, Earthworm Jim and DKC and it was not on the same level.
The controls and movement felt stiff, jumping felt delayed, your hitbox is too big and the enemies are whatever.
It also came out about too late.

The original FMVs were just stills of VHS recorded footage, meaning they were pretty low quality digital images with no higher quality masters to use. So it was remastered by cutting the images up, running the pieces through separate AI models trained on the actors' modeling portfolios + family vacation photo albums, and then re-composited to get images that look like high quality scans of 90s photographs.
It's more effort than you'd expect for an AI upscale of a game that's only known for being weird cheap crap.
