Soul.
why hasn't there been any game that comes close?
Lack of soul.
Also a drastic loss of creativity. You can clearly see it in design philosophy of the jenson games.
DX came from developers whose outlook on making games was influenced by freedom and player agency. This is reflected in all the off-the-wall ways you can exploit what the game gives you to play with. Even Invisible War at least kept that part correct, even if the rest of it limited the scale of what you could come up with.
Modern games are made by devs influenced by treadmills and theme parks. To them, freedom and agency are controlled variables they must deliberately write into the game, in order to ensure the player stays within bounds.
The result is shittier games with less ways to have fun with them.
i bought deus ex 1 at a flea market back in the day
my mom never wanted me to play it
always played it when she was at work
got as far as that asian city
Deus Ex is a jack of all trades, master of none when it comes to gameplay. Shooting isn't that good, stealth isn't that good, RPG mechanics aren't that good, etc. But it does all those things at the same time and is heavily carried by the story/writing, so it's still a great game but I don't consider it the greatest of all time or anything.
No game that comes close
Prey. /thread.
The OG though
Kneel
Its literally just Thief for retards. Thats why the game was made to begin with
heavily carried by the story/writing
And the soundtrack, and the atmosphere.
Also it's more than the sum of its parts.
why hasn't there been any game that comes close?
Peripeteia is RIGHT THERE.
Too junk.
THE FUCK IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN???
It's the best game of all time mainly because of its story and also there was nothing else really like it at its time. Deus ex heavily influenced a lot of modern games and most of them lack it's soul.
Looks way more like E.Y.E. than Deus Ex.
Rough, buggy, broken mechanics, empty world and lack of content, subpar graphics. I sympathize with the game, but it's very flawed and devs probably won't fix or change much by final release
It was made at a time when suits bankrolling vidya without interfering with the development process.
That's why early-mid 00s games were so unique.
When a distinct "winning formula" was found, that's when it all went to shit.
just started this game, do weapon mods carry over to all types of that weapon or is it just for the specific gun
The first was a labor of love and all the sequels were corporate products, including Invisible War which was made by most of the same team as the first.

Literally looks like Deus Ex, maybe even better.
fuck yourself schizo cp spammer
Go play again (with GMDX) and actually finish it this time.
The latter. Each gun is a real, physical thing you just can't carry more than one of a type.
IW was horribly butchered to work on consoles. It wasn't pure corpo slop.
fuck yourself schizo cp spammer
What the fuck. Are you high?
tranime
no thanks
Making the game for consoles first was a business decision.
Yes. They took what could have been a decent or better game and cut it to bits and put straightjackets on each.
The devs could have used UE1 again, and kept the bigass maps even on the Xbox. But from what I read, the publisher forced them to use the more resource-hungry UE2 for the prettier screenshots. That's why they had to make such tiny maps.
I beat this for the first time about three weeks ago.
I used Lady Denton
And the Revision maps. Not the soundtrack though that's awful.

Too many devs are very "Developer brained" these days.
Yeah its ok to have a vision or a message you wish to convey through your work but in the end your game will only be fun to you.
Providing a smooth canvas and variety of colors is the only job that you should fulfill, as a game dev. If you try to control the way someone paints, it will inevitably tick people off.
How did they do it
Bankrolled by Based Romero and filled with talent on the team
and why hasn't there been any game that comes close?
Any game that could be influenced by it came out post-9/11
Everyone blames the devs
Once you get to the level of a larger company, the problem is mostly shit management.
To make something like an immersive sim, you need tightly coordinated departments that are motivated and kept on track towards a unified goal. This doesn't work if the managers, execs, board members, etc. don't understand videogames and keep fucking everything up.
How well do you think a studio is going to do if their hiring processes are almost entirely kayfabe performance shit being done to make their quarterly performance look better to shareholders? You can't develop a game if your team might get laid off to make the exec look "forward thinking" in response to a dip in share prices.
The "controlled variables" approach in modern development is taken because most development happens on quasi-autopilot just so that not everything goes to shit when management fucks up or fails to give proper direction.
The truth is that the developers have very little control over their projects and since videogames are so labor intensive, this has resulted in publishers successfully driving off anyone who isn't desperate or stupid, since no one else would trust a publisher with the power dynamics that they can leverage.
It was probably the first and only time a western game had a great OST
Marathon says hi.

Almost forgot Mechwarrior 2.

Ironically, Deus Ex was probably the worst-managed on a technical level (Warren Spector admits his fuckups which included an entire art team and all their assets wasted). The lack of management on some aspects even contributed to how great it was, like one of the programmers going solo to make the lip syncing technology that was far ahead of any other video game at the time. The entire story was basically rewritten after the levels and characters were already made, some 18 months before release.
Invisible War was more unified and premeditated but it was also just more boring and passionless. In fact, the entire point of the imm sim, again according to Spector, is people exploiting the unexpected and bending games to their will.
is the 2011 game worth playing? I know it wont be the same but I need more deus ex
Its generic, heavily gimmicked TPS slop
The first two thirds were surprisingly solid, but it rapidly declines in the last third. And I don't mean "where is muh hub in vandenberg" "muh ocean lab is a watered down system shock 2" "i should be able to join bob page" -declines, I mean absolutely horrid liquid shit.
I'd go with Human Revolution or The Nameless Mod if I needed more Deus Ex.
Playing for the first time with the fem MC mod
The Nameless Mod
Based
It's surprisingly well made once you get over the fact it sprung up from planetdeusex forum shitposting.
I was on PDX back in 2002 so I get more joy out of the mod than most, rare to see supporters even though it's a gem not only of true imm sim gameplay but also a gem of early 2000s internet culture. The section where you explore the rotting archives of the pre-PDX boards really hits hard.
How old are you?
Straylight Productions had several other soundtracks as well
Developers aren't allowed to make good games.
That's pretty sweet having that extra connection to it's existence. I never posted on those places but I went to a few for cheats or something like that. I probably wouldn't have finally tried the mod out had Revision not made it retard proof by just giving an option to include it in the install. That was nice.
I'm guessing forties. Old enough to run out of bubblegum but kick your ass anyways kid
This.
I think WoW is the primary reason video games went to absolute shit.
Just endless grind in an empty theme park, with no consequences and no stakes. And the normies loved it.
He can't be in his forties and be completely unaware of Klepacki's music. As for you, you're obviously all out of ass.
Hotline Miami
Mirror's Edge
Jamestown
Frozen Synapse
Red Alert
Warcraft
Starcraft
Journey
The Nameless Mod
Unironically the best Deus Ex game after Deus Ex.
Invisible War was a neat sci-fi story that piggybacked off of Deus Ex.
the problem was of course how absurdly TINY the areas were due to consolization. It was made for Xbox. It had to read all the shit off a disc.
Not to mention anything and everything by Jeremy SOULe
Literally looks like Deus Ex, maybe even better.

Kill yourself with a GEP gun.
Human Revolution is better in every way. Hell, Invisible War is better in most respects but the underagefags on this board haven't played it, they just repeat what a youtube video essay told them to think.
Invisible War is a generic consolized piece of trash, Human Revolution is also a consolized piece of trash with a piss filter whose gameplay revolves around cinematic takedowns and regenerating health like every other dogshit 7th gen western game
How far are you? Do you like her? I thought she was okay but of course nothing will ever compare to whoever did OG JC Denton.
correct. fpbp.
I assume you decided to play an objectively worse version of the game so that you could play it properly the next time for an even better experience. Great idea.
while I was in Peripeteia threads everyone shilling it wanted to die on that hill that it's not a Deus Ex like game ( trying to separate the imsim criticisms away from their game itself )
So which fucking is it now?
youtube.com
this is still godlike
Invisible War is better in most respects
Name literally one respect that doesn't pertain to engine/tech (e.g. no ragdoll physics/dynamic lighting)
These peripeteia threads were made by one resident Anon Babble schizophrenic that was hellbent on trying to make it this board's "culture" but he failed miserably and ended up having constant crashouts through out his every thread just like this one.
