Astro Bot leans heavily on nostalgia so when it makes them feel like kids again then they're okay with it being a kiddy game. Really, the same is true with Mario for people that grew up on it. They feel transformed into a kid again when playing a Mario game.

This is the unfortunate truth.
Astrobot is a good game and a fun platformer. It deserves some of its accolades, but it's not better than Mario games. It does a lot of things right and it's a lot of fun, but comparing it to Mario is foolish.
