Modern engines use a deferred shading technique, which simply can't make proper transparency, it uses a dithering pattern like Sega Saturn. PS2 on the other hand, allowed to do insane thing with transparency and most assets for its games were made with this feature in mind.

There is some forward shading Renaissance happening right now in mobile in VR because it's just fast but hasn't reached bigger games yet.

Now you boot up the fucking game and fiddle around with a bunch of buzzword options for 10+ minutes the implementations of which vary from game to game and in the end you'll still probably get something that looks off because all the options for certain settings all suck no matter which one you pick.

Used to be all FP was 32bit, but then we got half precision at 2:1 half:full, so you can do twice as much or the same with half as much hardware. FP8 is quarter precision.

what dithering? that's clearly supposed to be an X texture applied to the glass itself. it's still transparent as in the original but they added detail to the lenses themselves.

Like the other guy said, deferred rendering engines took over. Older forward rendering engines draw all shapes in the visible scene, including overlapping ones, leading to overdraw. As a result, they choke hard on dynamic shadows/lighting as your light sources and scene complexity increase. Forward rendering engines went mostly out of style somewhere around 2010; Bethesda still used it for Skyrim, Fallout 4 etc.

Deferred rendering only draws the visible parts of the most prominent shapes in the scene. No overlapping shapes thus no overdraw (and as a result, far less of a performance hit from lighting/shading passes), but also nothing drawn behind the shapes intended to be transparent. Deferred rendering allows for relatively lightweight complex scenes, but if you want transparency, you have to somehow selectively force the rendering overlapping shapes, and dithering is your only truly cost-effective choice.

What you're looking at is called card hair as opposed to today's soft hair. Whereas modern hair attempts to render or give the impression of individual strands, card hair was split into layers. Card hair was basically just a flat model with a hair texture with transparency at the end.
