it's unlikely that she's dead, there's no grave marker and people don't seem to refer to her in the past tense the times she's come up. the little tidbits of text in the sweepstakes part II (thepoorchildren/lostwheretheforestwouldgrow) indicate it could be the bunker or that area of woods where she's gone missing, but I personally think she was mortally wounded or otherwise compromised in some fashion and can only exist in a Dark World without dying but a [COMMUNION] with either Gaster or some secret other thing allows her to leave long enough to create more fountains to create a 'perfect' world of darkness she and her family/friends can live in.

Some more shit happens that leads to things getting worse and Kris commits suicide(this is the original ending)

Gaster sees this shit and things "NAH THIS ENDING SUCKS"

New bizzaro timeline

Noelle hears of a mysterious voice and takes the kids to the bunker instead of the lake

Due to the error where Dess's death flag didn't trigger, the game had no idea how have the plot continue with her alive and physically erased her/keeps her frozen in the bunker

Kris and Noelle have overlapping memories of Dess drowning AND her just suddenly disappearing in the bunker so they still have feelings of it being this seriously traumatic event

Gaster disguises himself as the therapist to remove Kris's original SOUL so that our SOUL will eventually take its place

Our vessel is actually a placeholder to leave where Dess was "supposed" to be so the entire world doesn't crash or explode(typical game coding stuff).

Swatch's dialogue about the NEO body being incredibly powerful because of the hope the Lightner filled it with and Ralsei saying that the power of their fountain (which is made of pure darkness and accepts all Darkners) will transform the town as you bring recruits, leads me to believe that's the case.

I think it there isn't any hidden message and the achievement really is what it says it is. Which implies you can complete ch3 WITH issues.
I think ch3 is going to have its own weird route that:s difficult to get, all these hints point towards there being one. So when players start thinking "there's no ch3 weird route, we tried everything" we look back to these hints to realize we aren't trying hard enough and we need to do some time looping shenanigans.

The implication in the news post was that if you do some Weird shit you'll bypass the normal ending to the chapter entirely, and therefore not trigger the achievement

I think if there is something bigger to do with achievements, it's that the weird route will allow you to avoid more of them.
For example, the chapter 3 one "complete without issue" will probably not trigger if you make everything go completely off the rails with the speculated means of triggering it being much harder than chapter 2.
No achievements is probably the super challenge of this game, although it remains to be seen if that will give you any extra scenes / content.
It would be an interesting way of doing version exclusive content.

I'm like three quarters sure she's homeless or is otherwise in a pretty poor situation. She's constantly eating random junk, her clothes seem badly kempt, and she seemed pretty surprised by Toriel's house and attitude. I'm not completely sure on the part of being abused, but it does come across to me as learned behavior. Perhaps she was bullied herself and integrated that behavior as a way to shield herself, but it does seem a little odd to me how she apparently doesn't bother to tell her parents she's away in a friend's house. Maybe her parents/guardians are away or constantly working, so she barely gets to interact with them?

It's Goner Vessel with the Kindness SOUL that belongs to Kris, Chara possessed his body through our SOUL of Determination like a lingering ghost, we already know thanks to JP Chara IS with us. This probably follows the idea that Chara is with us in SOUL. Chara can possess Kris limitedly, the way he just starts spazzing in bed and then launches himself forward, and then walks like a zombie to take the SOUL out, and proceeds to act like Chara indicates to me that much.

But then why not just remove the SOUL permanently

Chara is powered by determination, in the long term he'd just fall off somewhere without us. Remember, we may have given him the SOUL but the determination is ours. As to why we even GOT to Kris in the first place, I believe it's Chara's doing. We were meant for the vessel, Chara discarded the Vessel and chose who to puppeteer, a human that lost his SOUL that looked akin to his image. I wouldn't be surprised if The Knight shows up eventually to try and get back the Kindness soul to his body, we know The Knight isn't inherently malicious otherwise, a Darkner with a SOUL like him would have done a lot more damage by now.
