I think Dark Ages looks good overall, but much like with Eternal and even 2016 I get the complaints. That said, there are so many retro FPS games on the market now I don't fault Doom for going in different directions. Why try to compete with Dusk or Amid Evil or Prodeus or whatever?

Eternal gives you a lot of room to fuck around though. It's true that there's no getting around the frantic pace (even on HMP it's easy to get butchered by a Hellknight appearing in your asshole or whatever), but you can play almost the whole game zipping around with the super shotgun if you want to. Yeah, you have to pay attention to resources and the animations can make the game feel tedious, but there's still a ton of room to play how you want otherwise. The big exception is the Marauder which restricts the player no matter how you slice it, but it isn't a puzzle game. By the time you're halfway through the game enemy weaknesses hardly even matter; you're often better off just blowing a Mancubus up than meticulously dissecting it with the rifle.
