Multiplayer was at its best when it was either people meeting up IRL to play split screen or in arcades, or people spending money to rent/own a server where they hosted their own custom mods and game modes.
The only time I still get that spark nowadays is when playing the occasional recent PC game that still has community dedicated server support, a server browser, and custom mods.
Gaming in a group used to feel like a social event, like going to a bar for drinks and hanging out with the regulars, the transients, the tourists, and the occasional weirdos and ruffians. Now it feels like either a chore or a weird algorithmic treadmill designed to keep you playing at the expense of the experience. Online MP feels less like hanging in a bar these days and more like being corralled into a fucking rehab facility.

Short answer is they implemented poor rushdown and comeback mechanics that make it feel like you are playing an itemless Smash Brothers clone.

devs of pokken tournament added a system for their stance forced base 3d fighter to tekken without the need to build the meter to use your ultra move like in pokken all fighters are the same now so all the tekken gods that "got gud" for their unique fighter now all play the same this made most people mad one way or the other

the devs don't fundamentally understand how their own game is played at all so at some point they decided that the only thing that matters is looking cool for casuals and making sure casuals felt powerful, and stripped the entire game down to the point where every character can randomly force the opponent to make a 50/50 coinflip off of a safe fast starter, where the opponent either loses half their health or blocks a safe attack that still damages them when they block anyway and they can't punish it. this update also came with several mindboggling changes, including but not limited to removing most character's weaknesses, giving a defensive character a powerful full-screen beam attack, and changing some execution heavy attacks and tricks so that they're now really easy to use but then also nerfed them into becoming useless and ruining the entire point of learning them

the blowback was so severe that it dunked the game instantly to mixed reviews on Steam with recent reviews still at
