Maelle gets better when you get Stendahl but even then I'm not sure if it's gonna be worth it because it'd mean splitting ressources, Lumina, weapon upgrades, etc, you probably won't be able to get two weapons up. And Medalum was nerfed so it's not as busted anymore so she might struggle a bit with AoE damage.

Just for Verso in the party, been overall loving the game so far but I'm honestly getting the frustrated with the parry system. The game has an interesting battle system with characters that each have strong gimmicks to themselves. I really like things like Maelle stance system and how the gun acts as a "free action", overall the the game has great mechanics and character building.
Unfortunately I feel like none at that matters in fights until I've nailed down the dodge/parry timings for a fight. It feels a little conflicting to spend time in my party menu doing all my jrpg management just to have that not matter in fights until I learn the timings.
Honestly, if the had the option to lock the camera to one more easier to angle for the fight I would complain less. Trying to figure out when to dodge/parry when using cinematic angles in a turn based jtpg just isn't working for (call me a shitter or whatever I stand by this.)

nta but what I did for the majority of the game was run Maelle with the substitute skill and a ton of defense, greater shell, healing parry, etc. She could usually eat several combos from enemies and then I could just healing tint her. Let me practice combos without really getting punished much for messing up (except for full team attacks that I just had to learn to avoid).

Thank you for the real response. Don't get me wrong, I know there all ways of building your characters to mitigate some of the need for the dodge/parry. My original post wasn't an outright indictment of the active defense system, just how the game is built around it. Regardless of what build I use the parry is needed to maximize (or even get strong) turns since it gives you AP. I even took the conceit of defaulting to putting Dodger on every character and even that only works with perfect dodges.

AP is just a bonus. The real benefit of parrying that you can't get out of dodging is that a completely parried attack results in a counter attack, which deals both a decent amount of damage as well as a chunk into the enemies stun bar.

The integrity of the game awards has always been questionable, but the whole "what is an indie game, really" shit about Dave the Diver and allowing A FUCKING DLC to be a contender for the GAME of the year award solidified how shit it truly is.

I feel like the AP is sometimes more important in some fights. Especially against shield based fights and fights like lanternmaster where the gun is important. I also found in general, from fights where I am constantly parrying, the AP gain is super important for mapping out your gameplan. When I know I can parry 3 hits on the enemies turn I can plan out huge damage turns because I can optimize around knowing I'll have 6 or 7 AP instead 4

With the Maelle build I was using the weapon that gave my team AP when Maelle gained AP in defensive stance. Then she sits in defensive stance and takes the combos and I parry, or she gets hit and I have energizing pain, and some other ways to gain AP. Gives a ton of AP to the party.

In all fairness got that exact weapon as the last thing I did before quitting the game tonight. It's from a big mob in the Cliffs that got me mad enough to post to make my original post. I was happy to see that as the reward cause I immediately saw the strength that ability.

But glad I can plan to build around AP manipulation, I used the AP potion a lot (at least to spoilers died). Is there a way to increase the overall difficulty? I did a bunch of sidequest and grinding for act 3 and I ended up just oneshotting everything in the final dungeon with my exploding Monoco setup and killing the final boss with auto attack :/

I feel like Lune having a lot of multi hit skills makes using Roulette on her a very safe choice for improving DPS.

Stendhal is still ridiculously broken, even after the nerf. I'm not even building around it and I'm not using Medulum and I can still hit things for 6.5 million damage. It'll nuke most things that aren't super-bosses.
My party is basically just Lune and Maelle with Sciel existing just to buff.

Because its an indie game. The fact that people even put it up against AAA titles is commendable.

Visually all the levels look very nice and have good atmosphere, even if they aren't the most unqiue looking, they usually do one things really well, like wind swept leaves or rain, to make the levels feel pretty and real
