The point is that technology isn't making huge leaps anymore like it did during the first half of the century. We're refining existing concepts instead of finding new ones. A (modernized) F15 would still be a very capable plane against most adversaries. Even recon drones are actually quite old.

grenade launchers that are good, so basically everything that uses western 40mm ammo and the chinese grenades, have a nice variety of ammo - plain explosive grenades, HEDP for a smaller blasts but more fragments, bouncing grenades for niggers that think they're clever and go prone thinking they can avoid getting fragged

they can spit out grenades to the other side of the map with great accuracy even if fired as a snapshot, they have pinpoint accuracy if fired in "mortar" mode

can also deploy smoke, which is vital if you're a retard like I am and changed the settings so that random encounters can have more than 50 enemies show up

or a machinegunner

merely firing a 20 rounds burst in a wide arc is enough to pin down enemies, sometimes it even shocks them even if no rounds land even nowhere near close to them

if you're using a machinegun that isn't shit you can just swap out the barrel when it overheats

if you aren't a retard you assign one of your mercs to be the assistant machinegunner so your main machinegun dude/dudette has ammo for days

if you have more than 110 IQ you also give the machinegun assistant a decent amount of hand grenades, but as a rule of thumb everyone in the squad should have plenty of frags anyway

yes they are shit compared to the super short assault rifles like the Colt model 933, short AKs and so on, but they also have super short aiming times and especially in the beginning of the game the less time it takes to aim a gun the better the gun is, even more so if you're playing literal meme shit like the trials in Blue Sun or the "evolution of guns" shit, they're also pretty good as sidearms if you take the time to unfold their stocks

you have a two merc team and you're facing a pack of 20 two legged animals in the typical jungle map that has extremely short lines of sight
would you rather have them equipped with

MAC10 loaded with the shittest ammo in 30 round magazines

or

Garand or Mini 30 with super spicy AP shit, the Mini 30 has a 10 rounds mag

consider it takes like a second to fire an aimed shot with the MAC10, while with the Garand, Mini 30 and most other similar fudd rifles it takes more than two and a half, even more if the merc that is using it isn't particularly strong (yes, strenght DOES influence aiming time, I don't know the exact formula but you can test that yourself, try aiming a fuckheavy rifle using a strong merc like Gabriel, then try doing the same with a chickenshit merc that has 70 strength or less)
I used to make that mistake when I first got acquainted with 7.62 and died a lot because of it
also shotguns get recommended as an early game crutch for different reasons but the principle is more or less the same
also also, body armor doesn't matter if you're a smartass and aim for the legs or arms, a hit with a 5.56 hollowpoint in the legs usually instantly pulls about 40 points of damage, induces severe bleeding AND also sends whoever it hits into severe shock, and there is no way to armor up neither arms nor legs lol
