The only game that had an Elf character I liked was Kamidori Alchemist Meister, and the Elf girl in your party in that game is established to be extremely eccentric and human-like, to the point other elves shun her. In other words, she was the least elf-life elf possible.

If they are featured in world building it's largely just the writer indulging in jerking off the complexity of the setting than it is using the setting for a narrative theme.

She's the worst one of the lot. She doesn't actually know him at all and wants him to be something he absolutely isn't and can't be because of a fantasy she projects on him. Now you could say Sword Maiden also considers him a fantasy but at least she of all of them understands him completely and doesn't want to change him (although thats not ideal, he does need some pushing out of his comfort zone). HEA is the only one that just wants to take him on fun buddy adventures, which is really the only thing that treats his PTSD and despite being all genki, never really tries to push him past where he is uncomfortable. GS needs ordinary friends to gently socialized with right now, not girlfriends, students or responsibilities. And he'll probably never be able to mentally make it past that.
