I'm still not sure if the game would have worked better without the canvas twist. The paintress really is just a godess that makes people gommage. It would be more about the expeditions struggling.
Still, among the "it's all in le head" video game stories this is one of the best ones.

Expeditioners serve a secondary purpose, normally when people die in the canvas their Chroma returns to the painter, however when nevrons kill people the chroma freezes in place and does not return.

Renoire intends to besiege his wife and slowly sap her power until she is starved out.

Those traits within Nevrons are defects, there's very little that implies all Nevrons experience them. It kinda felt like the story was gonna go in that direction at the start with Goblu, but it was either a red herring or a plot thread that got dropped. The fact that the extremely-skilled Clea ended up with a handful of defective creations might suggest that she subconsciously wanted them to be normal, thinking creatures and had to actively suppress that temptation in order to just make them killing machines, but that's about it.

Same, the first act had such a strong premise. The rest of the game was fine but I liked the mystery they had going in the first act more than what the story became. Seeing Renoir and his greying hair right away was really strong hook.

First thing I completely rejected off the bat was that he inhabinets from the painting "didn't have souls" We spent the first part though the eyes of Gustave who in that time. Had tons of people he cared for, had his lost love gommage in front of him, almost committed suicide out of grief. This to me showed the people living in the canvas were complex enough that exterminating them was absolutely wrong.

However, I don't agree with how Maelle handled things in such a self indulgent way. She stopped caring about the people of the canvas and only cared about making herself happy as well as robbing them of their grief and life with her powers. She can never go back to being Maelle again and she knows it. Life loses its flavor when you have the cheat codes to just bring back whoever you wants.

In the end I decided to end it with piano cuck Verso who I pretty much despised. Not for Verso but to force Maelle to move on because she apparently can't limit her time in the painting.

Think about it. All Lune and Sciel do after being brought back is exposition, and I'm not saying Alicia is in full control and they are just meatbags being driven around.
Think about it like sims characters, they can still do small things by themselves, but the narrative around their existence is at Alicia's fingertips.
They never truly question anything anymore, they never argue or show profound feeling like before, they just go along with everything Alicia does.
When encountering painted Clea, when sending off painted Alicia, the only one who says anything of importance is Verso. Sciel and Lune are basically not taking part in anything, they are non existent from a narrative standpoint.

the reason the game is so fucking good is that they are both right, the people of lumiere are sentient, wiping them out completely is questionable morally and ultimately alicias life may be pure misery, suffering a second tragedy, her way of coping is the least healthy way and resurrecting verso to live out her fantasy is a sign of her perceiving no boundaries to serve her own delusional happiness, in my mind even bringing someone like gustave back is questionable at best but the entire scene is haunting

Pre-gommage Lune would have had a field day with everything going on after Act 2. Yet she never does, she just talks small things, adds an irrelevant opinion here and there, and goes along with anything Alicia decides.

Because Verso's painting serves as excuse: she just wants a healthy body. She frankly doesn't care about Verso, let alone regrets causing his death. Aline grabbed it and painted a whole world with people (it was a kids' painting. Only gestrals and other childish creatures) to simulate having verso alive in a real-ish environment. From there everything went to shit and painted verso knows exactly what's been going on, plus 60 years of suffering and watching others suffer
