Neither is the right or wrong choice. We can all say "Oh yeah, you need to just face your problems" but if we were in Maelle's position and had the ultimate escape from our sadness and pain we'd probably take it. Meanwhile, Verso is watching his sister basically commit suicide via a drug addiction.

But on my first play through I chose the Maelle ending because to me the existence of Lumiere and its people wasn’t nothing to me and all that time I spent with them was fun and adventurous. I never got over Gustave dying. I suppose to a certain degree my feelings are actually what the game is telling me if what’s actively keeping the cycle going but I felt like if I had did the Verso ending it would have meant none of it mattered. Seeing everyone wave goodbye to Maelle in the Verso ending is cute but only symbolic because we all saw how ultra ass heated Lune was when she realized what happened. Assuming a sequel is in the world I assume it will place Versos ending as the cannon one since whatever happens now will have a clearer slate to work with.

The MC for most of the game is Maelle, not Verso, which makes sense because we already give a shit about her and can sympathize because we've also lost Gustave. You slowly learn more about Verso through his interactions with the other characters and from journal entries, but he doesn't really achieve MC status until the third act recontextualizes everything. After that you have a much more proper standing of both him and Maelle, and only after all of that are you able to choose between them. It's only not a coincidence that Maelle's ending is the easier choice while Verso's is what most people would consider the "better" choice, or at least the more emotionally satisfying one.
