Botw was good because it was expansive but not overwhelming. Totk throws too much at you at once. I constantly have the impression that there's a hundred different things I could go do at any given time, but none of them stick out as the thing I should do, including the main story.

I really enjoyed TotK's narrative. It's rare to see a simple old fashioned love story between two white heterosexual characters.

TotK is a tale about recovering from tragedy. Link fails to save Zelda in the beginning. He is hurting from the trauma. He is haunted by Zelda's ghost everywhere he goes.

Every shrine Link beats, every heart container he gets, it expunges a little bit of the pain from him. He heals.

In the final redemptive dive, he has a chance to save Zelda where he failed before.

It's so fucking satisfying and amazingly kino I don't know how Nintendo will ever top it.

I did all the shrines in BotW. Was alright, 7/10 experience. With TotK I got to a point where I was just bored and rushed the rest of the story. I don't know if this is a common sentiment but the shrines feel way worse in TotK. In BotW they mostly felt like puzzles that were satisfying to figure out even if there were some bad ones. In TotK the shrines feel like janky shit you're expected to jank your way through and it's not satisfying at all.

In TotK they are huge multi-floored/multi roomed minidungeons. Even the all of the caves and wells have more content, gameplay variety, puzzles and rewards than the shrines in BotW.

I had the opposite experience. The shrines in TotK mostly felt like 1 room or 3 puzzles of the same thing but more elaborate in a row. Maybe you're talking about shrines I didn't do but I sure as fuck don't remember many shrines like that other than the kill the enemies ones.

I replayed BotW in its entirety the month before TotK shipped, and I can say with confidence that TotK is just BotW but with more, and mostly better content, especially the Main story, but maybe not so much the memories that you unlock or how kind of extra-retarded the plot is in TotK, but it's ultimately more dramatic thanks to a personal showdown with Ganondorf instead of some blob creature.

In the end they're 2 of the weakest Zelda games and to me they're not even Zelda games ultimately. They don't have the original sauce of the NES game which was more like an open world "mystery" game, or the finesse of games between OoT and SS, which are these Hero's Odysseys where the whole game is crafted around the player's journey as a self-insert protagonist in a straight-laced fantasy adventure.

In BotW you wake up in a world of ruin with no idea who you are or what happened. You have to piece the story together by resorting your memories.

Same shit with the Princess Zelda mystery in TotK.

BotW has more in common with the original NES Zelda than any game in the series.
