Why is Doom 3 ranked so low? Is it because the gameplay is more survival horror than fast paces arcadey? I'm only a casual Doom fan. Played the original when I was a little kid but remember enjoying 3 as a teenager and prefered the stylistic difference. I haven't played it in like 20 years though, so maybe my memory isn't good.

for me personally it's just not what i wanted from the series, but i wouldn't call it a bad game by any means. if it wasn't called doom it probably would've been an easier pill to swallow at the time. i feel more or less the same about quake 4, too.

I'm glad you asked. I'm more than willing to share my opinion. This is easy. I played Doom in the '90s, so I'm qualified to comment. Here's my personal list of Doom games, rated from best to worst.

The best Doom games:
Doom 2 — the best Doom game of all time. All the WADs and mods are for it.
Doom 1 — simply because without it, Doom 2 wouldn't exist. Doom 2 is more of an add-on than a full-fledged entry in the series, but that's irrelevant
Doom 3 — a fantastic graphical feat with a new twist on gameplay, excellent sound design, and good horror themes. Do you often see those moving meat tubes in horrors? I don't. It's a good game
Doom PS1 — it added to the horror, but it's just good old Doom. Carmack said it was the best-looking Doom at the time. I just wish it had more decorations and enemies

Bad Doom games:
Doom 64 — the enemies look plastic, and the weapons have two frames, LOL

Notable mentions:
Doom (2016) — They tried. I appreciate that the game had competent software engineers, was well optimized, and pioneered the Vulcan API, which was rarely used by AAA studios at the time. Gameplay: mediocre. Story: bad. At least it looks good and runs well
Doom RPG — I had fun.
Doom RPG 2 — I had fun again
