New players don't know that traps have been replaced with hand traps, and that you need 10+ hand traps minimum to have any hope playing 2nd.
It's hilariously unintuitive, and isn't taught anywhere in any tutorials because Konami doesn't want to acknowledge that their game is unplayably bad without hand traps for some reason.

Handtraps exist because the illness that is powercreep/combospam has made handtraps a necessary symptom for Yu-gi-oh, rather than being the true problem. If you banned all handtraps without banning anything else then the game would be in every conceivable way unplayable going 2nd. Even with board breakers you would want to kill yourself waiting 15+ minutes for your opponent's turn to finish.

You're not looking at this from the right perspective. Imagine powercreep/combospam as a disease that is constantly evolving, and that the various counters(Like handtraps) made for this disease are immune responses that cause the various symptoms associated with illness.
Handtraps are like your immune system causing you a fever to deal with the disease of combospam, but now that disease has evolved a resistance to those handtraps through powercreep that requires even more handtraps to deal with, which come with even more intense fevers.
So basically what I'm saying is not that handtraps are good for the game, but they're a necessary evil to make the game barely playable going 2nd, and also everything I say about handtraps applies to board breakers as well.

Even back in 2014 it was still hard to OTK an opponent in-engine. You couldn't even do it with Dragon Rulers if there was a single body on the field (neither Dragossack or Big-Eye could attack if they used their effects).

In an era of the game that was expected to last ~6 turns the idea that you could end the game on turn 2 was abhorrent. This was following bans to Solemn Judgment and most of the staple traps, with a single Warning legal. Your chances of getting sacked by Pendulum was greater than you chance of opening your 1-of defensive card.

The only hit Mermail is going to get is Minstrel banned, and everyone will drop the deck after that anyway

Funny thing is that the hand loop has been around for as long as Prince and Dragoon have been around, but no one cared since the deck wasn't good enough yet. It is very hilarious leaving your opponent only 3-4 cards for their starting hand.
For me the choice to play the new Mermail deck was easy since I already had the previous inconsistent version of the deck, so I only needed a small number of new URs.
As for whether you should make it, it depends on whether you would still want to play water decks in general even if they did remove the Glacia hand rip guy, since Water Extra Decks are basically their own thing due to Water locks.

Pends were utterly mediocre through whole MR3 and only somewhat recently konami gave them actual tools to get on par with standard decks.
