Also the new SS4 looks a billion times better than the GT version. The big bad is XXI who is a world eater from the old kaioshins time. He is currently trying to manipulate everyone against everyone so he can create enough chaos, so when the dragon is summoned for the winners wish, he can steal it and ask for free multiversal travel. And then eat every universe.

Zen Buu (Super Buu, after winning and absorbing everyone worth absorbing in the galaxy) was a midboss. He wanted to take over the tournament and make everyone fight everyone, because he had so many strong Saiyan personalities inside him that he was a fight freak too. But in the end he just got teleported home.
The more interesting part was that it implied that he got the dai kaioshin to collude with him, plus he started training Uub to do proper magic in a pocket dimension and he was still stuck there when Buu got sent home. Uub hasn't been seen ever since.

I'K'L also finally made an appearance. Yamcha beat him.

Funniest part by far: Freeza still did not land a single punch, just according to what Nappa taunted him with.

There was also a dream sequence where Raditz got mystic powered up, but he was still a weakling, so he fused with crazy Goku (they are both awesome in the comic). SS3 Vegita beat the tar out of them.

XXI is the old bald alien guy who can take on a dust cloud form. The only thing we know of him so far is that he is a world eater threat, has a "real" form that was not yet revealed fully (looks dragon-ish, kind of like Hildegarn), the old Kaioshin is making plans against him that involve powering up Raditz to mystic levels, and he has dragon balls in his rooms that he uses to come up with ways to beat enemies (getting a remote to shut down #17, finding the incantation to seal Buu, etc).

Literally no one thinks any pat of GT's story is better than even the worst arc of Super. Not one person. You liking some of GT's designs doesn't change the fact that GT didn't do anything even remotely interesting with them.

to be fair XXI was also always shown as a mage who used magic to teleport away enemies and such. And his fight with Namek Ass Guy was the only way they could work in Janemba to the story who was a really cool villain.

You forgot that it ends with Zen Buu taking over the entire arena and has a free for all with everyone, Vegetto tries nuking all of him but fails, then the ducks just teleport him home. He also coached Uub in magic and Uub is still locked away in his pocket dimension with a cute girl. He'll probably come back in the final minute to one-up XXI when the shit hits the fan.

There are also a few of Bardocks visions that have yet to happen:
- Vegitto choking Gohan
- Piccolo stating that its not the universe at danger, but all the universes
- Goku and Vegita being rowdy and Piccolo reminding them they are only alive because of him
- Goku shaking hands with a cell junior
- Gohan holding a broken in half dragon ball in his hand

Most of these line up with XXI fairly well. He was shown using dragon balls himself to win the fights, he gave a black senzu to Vegitto which probably acts as a mind control device, and if XXI gets his way, all the universes will be in danger just like Piccolo will say.
Goku working with Cell Jr will be lol if it actually happens though. Cell was fantastic in the Bra fight, even creating tiny little cell juniors to act as support teleporters.

his goal is to kill everyone and stop XXI from winning because ??? (motive not revealed yet)

he eventually jobs to Yamucha because he's a pretty mediocre fighter reliant entirely on his main ability

adjacent to this is another interruption where the newly released Elder Kaioshin mindpalaces how to stop XXI, with his first idea being to fuse a potential unlocked Raditz with Kakarotto, which he foresees as ending with nothing being achieved aside from his own ejection from the tournament grounds (2024)

The second semi-final finally starts with Gast vs XXI (starting in 2024)

XXI summons Janemba and Gast manages to beat him, but then XXI just finishes him off

a chapter long awards ceremony occurs to precede the final match (Main series Goku vs XXI)

currently the story is in a pre-final side story where XXI has laid the ground work for another tournament interruption involving the Kakarotto universe and Vegetto

The general thing with the flash forwards is that they seem somewhat useless and innocuous (when he's not being possessed funnily enough) but turn out to be pivotal plot points half the time.
I imagine that's at some point post a defusing of Vegetto, which is an inevitability.
An underlying idea of the universe is that something gets fixed at the end of this.
With Babidi's for example, the fix was removing him entirely, or Bojack where his gang is defeated in the special chapter, though with others like Boo they already exist in a fairly idyllic state and there's nothing to fix.
The big issue with U16 is Vegetto, who is only a mixture of Goku and Vegeta's absolute worst traits, so I imagine that flashforward with Piccolo is a peek at a later unfused Vegetto scene.

I just checked all the visions, none of them show goku or vegita with potaras on. Vegitto is teased as the big bad repeatedly so just defusing him would be a cop out. So Goku ages a year for every second and turns into a mustached grandpa by the fights end but still wins. Then outside the mental battle, in the real arena, he one shots Freeza.

Best part is that Nappa taunts Freeza that he won't get a single hit in for the entire tournament, and 15 years and 2500 pages later, Freeza STILL COULDN'T MANAGE TO GET A SINGLE HIT IN.

- one where Saiyans never got space travel and remained cavemen
- one where Goku never got to Earth and Bulma instead joined old Son Gohan on the quest to find the dragonballs (Yamcha became his pupil),
- one with other random Toriyama characters
- one where Saiyans led by Bardock rebeled against Freeza and won, made their empire, then got all killed by Raichi (Earth survived because Piccolo Daimao rejoined Kami, killed Raditz, then turned the planet to hell)
- one where ALL the Nameks fused to beat Freeza and turned into a super namek god thing on par with Buu
- a bunch of original characters, including Mary Sue herself (Arale one shots her).

DB Super ended up swiping a bunch of those ideas, whether intentionally or not.

The early episodes are DB-like adventure crap and it's really, really weak, especially considering that it has 2 super saiyans doing shit like sneaking from the police when they could blow up the city with minimal effort. Goku only goes Super ONCE.

I have to admit I got bogged down at the first episodes too, but I plan on finishing it since I heard it goes back into fighting shortly after.
