Which of the 12 classes are you maining when Maplestory Classic arrives?
i haven't played in 20 years. the recent buzz made me check out some vids and people are leveling up to 250 in three hours or something? how is that possible?
i'm not really interested in classic maplestory
the game itself was objectively fucking garbage, what made it good was the community, the culture, and the novelty
grinding 5000 hours with a bishop to hit 200 is just not good gameplay
200 is the cap for a very long time
then they decide to raise it to 250 and add 5th job
make getting to 200 quick and easy, 200-250 is the main grind now
time goes on, expand the level cap to 300, add 6th job, and speed up 200-250 accordingly
it's just how vertical progression mmos work dude
It's pay to win and you pay to win.
For me, it's Marksman.
Good range and mobbing
Cheap gear because DEX class
Cheaper mastery books than Bowmaster (assuming mastery books return)
Strong against multi hitbox bosses like Horntail
Bowman classes get a free pass to boss parties thanks to Sharp Eyes
Crossbows are cool
I hate needing to manually pick up drops so much
shant fall for nostalgia bait
people are leveling up to 250 in three hours or something? how is that possible?
The modern version of Maplestory has extremely overpowered events designed to push you to the start of endgame and keep you hooked. The game isn't about real gameplay anymore, it's about doing dailies and minmaxing your event gains. Whenever an event ends, a new one shows up in 2 weeks. They do this as a fucked up attempt to justify the obscene amount of grinding, time gating, and RNG needed to progress during lategame. And even with all the events it's still an unforgiving grind.
i always wanted to get into maplestory, because the moment-to-moment gameplay of jumping around maps and killing mobs is fun, but it's so fucking unbelievably dailypilled that i could never justify it. at one point i looked up the arcane force shit to see just how bad it really was, and maxing the first symbol would've taken over a year and a half of dailies and weeklies.
absolute insanity.
classic will unironically be more p2w than current maple lol
seriously. HP washing is completely fucked and all those ap resets you need are cash shop items.
That's why they rent you a pet for $10 a month.
Maybe Snipe will even be 5 sec cooldown this time instead of lagging to 7-10 seconds.
they'll ruin it like maplestory and maplestory 2, who even has faith in them doing it correctly this time?
This shit gonna die quick once people realise it's all nostalgia hype and nothing more. You want long ass grind sessions current maple still has that and more. Same with henehoe and socialising in general. Just take your head out of your ass for one second and you will realise quickly how shit of an idea this is
Hey nexon shill why wont you use new material no one is going to fall for the same bait if you keep repeating it
Seggs with Kanna
nta but I don’t doubt a lot of people will quit or go back to modern/pservers. The question is what kind of changes they make, because a literal 1:1 classic server will shit the bed and even Nexon knows that.

Pirates were not present in the teaser footage, nor was Nautilus on the map. There's no guarantee they'll be there at launch (if at all).
He doesn't know they hired Nemi, the first lead developer of early Maplestory
He doesn't know that quality of life changes are confirmed for Classic World
He thinks it'll be a fad when shit like Oldschool Runescape and Classic WoW are still thriving
The fact that Global Maplestory became less of a dumpster fire after Inkwell took over is proof that they want to save their flagship game. Now I'm no fan of the modern game, but I've kept up with the news thanks to friends. Combine this with the fact that they're finally delivering a classic server, and it's obvious Nexon realized they need to give their global players what they want. I don't know the situation in Korean Maplestory, but the fact that they suddenly care much more about the global audience should mean something.
I’m aware of all your meme arrows and look forward to this release, but I’m still being cautiously optimistic. There’s a lot they can fuck up.
What class I play is highly dependent on if 4th job is present.
If not, Priest.
If so, Shadowed.
Cleric is my favorite class (I like support/buff classes) tarnished by knowing my eternal fate will be to spam Genesis for all eternity after 130, where the only support I'll be giving involves leeching. Not my scene.
Doubtful. Inkwell has been actively trying to steer GMS away from p2w despite Nexon Korea's insistence on making the mere privilege of breathing an NX premium. He knows that shit won't fly on Classic.
At worst, it'll be pay for convenience.
The HP values in the trailer footage does not match with the values in current OSMS builds. There likely won't be a need for washing.
The pieces are all in place for them to make it good. They just have to not fuck it up, and the crew they have gives me hope that Classic will be as popular and as explosive as 2005 Maplestory, if only for a few months at most.
Fuck, just being able to time travel back to 2005, if only for a short while, would be enough for me.
Things they need to do:
UNHIRE THE ENTIRE TEAM that designed MS as a mobile gacha with dailies
Remove all dailies
Create an alternative end game with all new assets.
Bring back fun wizet events and snowboard hunting activities but make enemies drop temporary cosmetic gacha gear instead. No cubes are paywalled.
And I MIGHT be back
won't be able to pop niggas with a gun because no pirates
Sad.
Some NX Crossbows are guns.
quality of life
The lack of qol is part of what makes the mmos of back in the day. Adding qol would just bring it more inline with modern mmos...
I haven't played this game in over 10 years and I don't think I have the patience to deal with an MMO anymore but its cool to see the old UI, skill animations, and deleted skills again.
chances are they will have old cash shop stuff like 90 day pets (idk if they're perm now), cosmetics, merchants, 2x coupons, the old fashion gacha where it was town based, wheels of destiny?, w/e else that was in the old cash shop
No, people played old MMORPGs DESPITE those flaws and jank because most people used them as virtual hangouts before Skype and later Discord took over that scene.
Very few people are going to download a 50+ gb game just to talk to people they could just as easily be talking to on Discord, so the least they could do is make it more fun to play as a game.
Myself, I wouldn't mind if they eventually went with some class balance changes. Nothing major, just do something with all the dead/trash skills, like Archer's FA or Wizard's Slow or literally everything about Page. Every class, at every stage, always seemed to have at least one skill that was the "beginner's trap", which leads everyone to max all but those skills, leaving very little build variety. I'd think it'd be cool if they did something about that.
They might start the game with only Victoria Island and 2nd job, then do monthly content updates while they slowly figure out what direction they want to take with the game. Eventually they'll have to add new content while keeping the game faithful to the classic experience. I'm also hoping they add the class changing system from GMS, where explorers can change jobs as long as the job matches their archetype.
but I’m still being cautiously optimistic.
That's fine dude, but I'm willing to give this an honest chance, come hell or high water. This game means a lot to me, and after seeing other classic servers thrive and evolve, I'm happy to finally have something that appeals to me.
I know the official announcement is later this year but any clue whether pets and cosmetics are still on a timer/subscription basis? Or do we finally get perm ones
There was also teleport rocks which were really fucking stupid. Their introduction completely ruined the boat system.
We know almost nothing yet, and won't know until October at the earliest unless someone leaks info.
How are pets/cosmetics in modern maple?
oh yea
and then there was hyper rocks that let you teleport to maps
i had a temp one and boy was that fun being able to zoom almost everywhere, but yea boats are top comfy
I remember buying a pet as a kid and not realizing I was only renting it.
Just thinking about taking a 15 minute boat ride with 30+ of you faggots brings a tear to my eye. And half of you retards will die to the Balrog outside. I can't wait.
Wizard's Slow
No fuck you, I like slow even if its use cases can be counted on one hand. Seal and Partial Resistance can go, however.
Is it confirmed to be 1x though? Even if so, there might be mechanics that gives you EXP multipliers, like 3x from quests instead. Or hunting quests (kill x100 x999) etc, so players are encouraged to get together and party up for those quests.
Just make Seal work on bosses at a % chance or something. Give Mages some utility in boss fights, fuck.
I remember post big bang I got a perm pb pet from a limited cash store gacha box (Not GMS), was hype till I remembered the pet equips were still timed
They'll probably run 2x events like the good old days
And hopefully a ton of town/GM events. Fuck jump quests though
Fuck jump quests though
Skill issue
GM event jump quests at 5fps (because shit PCs 15 years ago) was a dog shit experience
i linked based blackgoku this thread
its a physical fitness jq event
Old MMOs had quality of life updates, Anon. You just didn't notice it because games didn't modernize and lose their identity back then. Also the term "quality of life" wasn't widely used in gaming at the time.
Realistically they'll probably do what GMS does and have lootboxes full of random permanent cosmetics, which become untradeable after equipping, while everything else in the shop is a 90 day rental. You know how it is man, companies gotta make money off their assets or else they pull the plug. Personally I'd rather have a daily shop system instead, where every cosmetic is permanent but you only see a number of random items every day.
pets in modern maple
Pets are even worse in modern maple, you don't wanna know. However, I'm pretty sure that Nexon knows classic fans won't tolerate pay to win mechanics.
Bowmaster for sure, I love archers in MapleStory, even if they’re the worst class in the game
Strafe is just way too cool, it’s my favorite skill in the entire game
Jump
Hangs in mid air because early 2000s internet
Magically at the bottom of the map when the game reconnects after 5s
Here's hoping Buccaneer is more than just a Time Leap mule.
jump quests
Good news, you'll be doing nothing instead because no pirates
Pets are even worse in modern maple, you don't wanna know
Im curious now.
And yeah if there's perm gacha boxes and a rotating small shop of perm skins it'll probably be the best case already since Nexon definitely won't add buyable perms.
everyone in the classic server will be in their 30s or close to it
More for me, then.
I'll be flooding the market with Eyes of Fire the minute I can reliably kill Zombies. I have spent many, many private server rides making the Zakum JQ my bitch and now my training will finally pay off.
Good. I don't want to play with literal fucking children, especially current year children.
muh too much qol
In a long-term run, basic qol are pretty much mandatory. After all the game still has to be fun beyond its nostalgiabait. All the (self-claimed) purists won't be lasting more than 2 months anyway. As always, it's the obnoxiously loud minorities thinking they're allowed to have opinions.
As for hp-washing it obviously wouldn't be a thing since revenue from reset scrolls will be pennies in the scope of maplestory's current revenue and the downside of losing endgame retention is too large.
Cash items would likely boil down to
pets
cosmetics
tp rocks
personal shop hires
eventually owl of minerva
Fuck teleport rocks I hope they never get added.
Pirates were pre-big bang. Either you're getting them at launch or you're getting them a month after.
Im curious now.
In modern Maplestory, pets from the shop are 90 days as usual, but sometimes they bring pet lootboxes that have a chance to give permanent pets. There are also Luna pets which can pick up items at a massive radius, I'm talking like half the damn screen. You get them either through lootboxes, or direct purchases through special events. Luna pets aren't permanent and they need a special water of life to be revived. Not the normal water of life that revives normal 90 day pets, this one costs more because fuck you.
Nexon definitely won't add buyable perms.
They actually do sell permanent cosmetics as a direct purchase during events from time to time. It's usually a bundle that gives a specific outfit, or random cheap perms like a bargain bin section. Also, permanent transparent cosmetics only show up once or twice a year as a direct purchase.
Pirates were pre-big bang
So was Aran. That don't mean shit.
normal pets are pretty much free with events and such but you might want to pay like $1-3.5 just for small qol like auto potion or auto buff if it doesn't have it
but there now are vac pets that suck in everything bear it ($70-100 in heroic) that also require $10.5-15 monthly fee after the first 3 months but nowadays there's less focus on training so it's really just a luxury option
Angelic Buster is pure sex
Agreed. I want her to fart on me.
Angelic Brapper
doing mass guild attunement for Zakum
lapping shitters in the jump quest 3 times when they still haven’t done it once
teleport rocks
Honestly I don't mind the boat rides as long as they make them a little bit faster. Instead of 15 minutes, lower it to 10.
Boats arrive at every 10th minute mark
You get 3 minutes to board the ship
Ride takes 7 minutes
This way the boats do 6 trips per hour instead of 4.
How was bucc back then? Just looking at numbers and cooldowns on skill databases, it looks like a wet turd. But I also can’t find any anecdotes from people who actually played them.
They didn't have the most damage in terms of numbers, but what they had was survivability. A good number of their skills granted them iframes, allowing them to dodge attacks other classes couldn't, thus spending less on potions and had much less risk of dying. Boss fights were all about cycling your skills to keep those iframes to dodge particularly nasty hits, and then hitting with your stronger skills for damage, while also utilizing Time Leap to help your Bishops and Shadowers get their own survival skills (Resurrection/Smokescreen) off cooldown when necessary, and keeping Speed Infusion up for the Archers/Corsairs/Heroes (not Night Lord, they barely benefit because they already attack so fast).
As for training, it was as mindless as other classes. Rush with Corkscrew/Backspin (or Snatch if you're transformed) and spam Dragon Strike until they die, repeat.
Buccs have that cool super saiyan transformation too that got removed some years ago
based marksman enjoyers
you guys are so fucking sad lol
k fag
"NOOOOO STOP HAVING FUN AIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE"
Don't you have a denuvo/eceleb/twitter cap to be posting in?
Dark Knight
Maybe they'll make Pages not so useless
get real homos. whats next on your list? connecting the dots, making soap bubbles or drawing with crayons?
Yes. And you're not invited.
BUFF PAGES FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
What even happened to the holiday events? I remember stuff like Independence Day, Halloween, Lunar New Year, Valentine's, Maplemas, and so on. But by the time I quit, which must've been nearly a decade now, I don't really remember if those events were still happening.
Happyville hasn't been seen in years.
it's maplestory "classic", not maplestory "we fixed the old problems"
it will be PURE nostalgiabait
They removed that over a decade ago
Watch the reveal video, faggot.
anyone else sign up for the playtest?
I don't live in Commiefornia, so no.
If launch only has second job, I will pray for every Page main.
lol
*killsteals you out of your blood harp channel with my bishop because of my superior california ping*
nigga i cant even find it
Independence Day
Valentines
I remember these two littering the maps with garbage you can’t pick up.
LUKless Bishop, the way Nexon intended.
Guys, Nemi is kinda cute...
Statless gear made it too easy to forego the secondary stat. Minmaxers should have to work for their gains.
Now I'm curious, surely Page couldn't have been that ba--
Sword Mastery
Blunt Weapon Mastery
Final Attack: Sword
Final Attack: Blunt Weapon
Sword Booster
Blunt Weapon Booster
Threaten (single target luck-based debuff)
Power Guard (shitty damage reflection)
NOT A SINGLE FUCKING ATTACK SKILL
You have to spam Slash Blast until 3rd job
Jesus christ, and here I was thinking Crossbowman had a shitty 2nd job. They seriously need to adjust the skills of certain jobs.
Fighters have a near identical skill set. The only differences are Rage instead of Threaten, and Axes instead of BWs.
But unlike Fighters, 3rd job doesn't fix them.
Huh, its acceptable enough (by people used to Nexon's normal standards of greed)
Just have to wait till the big sale to roll around to buy cosmetics or "suscribe" for the usual 90d deals if you want it immediately
??? All of the warriors had to do that, hero had to do that until 4th job. What made wk shit is that he didn't have any att buffs like sader and he didn't have hb or good 3rd job attack skills like dk did. He was just useless and didn't even get tankier than other warriors until the 150s when 4th job was out. He needs a giga buffed power guard and a giga buffed mobbing threaten to be any good. Elemental charges as party buffs would also be really amazing.
Hope they don't add the weird family system where you end up having to MLM with randos because your friends moved on to other stuff after 2-3 months
We're currently prioritizing participants located in Southern California who can travel to our Nexon America office in El Segundo, CA. Don't miss this rare opportunity to be part of MapleStory history!
I'm not even on the same continent(s) as the USA gdi. Guess they're doing in-office experiences only
The devs have been making content strictly for level 260 - 290 for years now.
This is a PROBLEM because it's ONLY in that level range.
So to alleviate this problem, they do regular events where you can level additional times per level (i.e. 1+2 and now 1+4) all the way to level 260.
Reaching level 260 gives you 6th job and the implied final part of Maplestory (unless they extend the level beyond 300 somehow).
The amount of XP needed to level from 299 to 300 is more than the amount of XP needed to level from level 1 - 298.
tl;dr
People are leveling up insanely fast because the devs want people to be level 260 to experience the new content. There is A LOT of stuff to do at that level, but you also speed through like 17 years of legacy content because it's all outdated by basic stuff at level 260. The game also incentivizes having multiple high-level characters too (Legion giving ~ 4% final damage % per character, with a max of 42 characters giving you an approximate 168% final damage boost, or an approximate 340% damage boost).
My current plan for Classic Maplestory is:
If the accuracy formula is the modern version like people are expecting
Page
If the accuracy formula is a reworked old version (unlikely)
Bandit
If Pirates exist
Cannoneer
If Cannoneer doesn't exist
Brawler
Cannoneer
Anon...
3rd job doesn't fix them.
Alright, there's no way Page doesn't get better at White Kni--
It's a bunch of lame passives and a shitty single target attack
Damn, I hope we get small but faithful class reworks.
All the warriors were like that
Sorry, I hardly played warriors back then so I didn't know.
Elemental charges as party buffs would also be really amazing.
Making Paladin more useful in parties makes sense, yeah.
why do people act like cannoneer released with pirates or something lmao, that class was made in 2011 and would completely steamroll classic maple.
There are people who don't want the old accuracy system
Those people are fake fans. The accuracy system is one of the few factors that shaped your class identity and determined where you could train. If they homogenize everything I'm gonna be pissed.
How's Maplestory M?
I know it didn't release with pirates. I just really liked cannoneers. Though since pirates aren't even shown in the announcement, I see it as an all-or-nothing thing for them.
Gotta remember that Maplestory Classic isn't them just rolling out old patches sequentially, but literally rebuilding Maplestory Classic in the Modern Maplestory world.
The reason people are questioning the accuracy is because the announcement video showed level 20 people attacking iron hogs without missing, implying it's using the modern formula.
rebuilding Maplestory Classic in the Modern Maplestory world
Gives me a bit of faith. I really don't think cannoneer fits there at all though unless they make him based on the original tespia version that was extremely slow and didn't have the insane mobility.
It's not very good but the Maplestory M exclusive classes are cool.
They're hinting at porting Sia (a constellation mage that uses an Invoker-style combat system) and Erel Light (a spearman that uses starlight magic who can summon knights made of starlight) to normal Maplestory.
the announcement video showed level 20 people attacking iron hogs without missing, implying it's using the modern formula.
Makes sense why people would think that, then. But a reasonable counter point would be the fact that trailers and teasers are always scripted. Maybe they were given special gear to record footage with. Or maybe they made iron hogs a lower level enemy. Still, I hope accuracy matters in classic like it did back in the day. Classes having different options for training spots was nice.
My friend said I/L mage was hard to level early on. Is he right?
For mages it was less statless gear and more that the magic formula was fucked. 5 attack should not be equivalent to 5 AP in main stat.
I personally suspect that it won't just use the modern accuracy formula, but that secondary stats won't matter anymore either.
The reason for this is because
Maplestory is being built on the modern engine
Modern Maplestory removed secondary stat requirements for everything, including legacy equips you can buy in stores
The HP values in the announcement showed growth consistent with modern HP values (e.g. no more HP washing due to new HP formula)
secondary stats won't matter anymore
I hope they make stats matter. I never liked builds that avoided secondary stats.
First job mage is pulling teeth. You're stuck whacking snails for 1-2 damage, if this is true classic you won't have access to Throw Snail Shell, and getting to level 8 to job change will take you probably 3-4 hours.
Then as a reward, you get to put one point into energy bolt and then spend the next 5 levels dumping points into increased MP gain, or else you brick your character. You have to bolt slimes and stumps for another ten hours until you finally unlock Magic Claw, at which point you slowly but steadily become a solid first job class in your mid 20s.
At 30 you job change and get to choose between Cleric, I/L or F/P. Cleric is the easiest class and can get into any party just by being a healer, no surprise there. F/P is absolute fucking unusable dogshit and by far the worst second job class of ANY class, it's that bad. They get no good skills.
I/L on the other hand is actually one of the best second job classes. It has access to one of the best aoes at that point, with good damage, long range (can hit above or below you, very important), and a freeze chance. Its only drawback is that it is very MP intensive, and sustaining potions on a fresh 1x classic server is going to be nigh impossible. But if you get lucky and sell some rare drops, I/L is arguably the fastest class to grind with.
It flips when you get to third job. I/L sorta stalls out, it's not bad but not exciting. F/P on the other hand gets to cheese their levels by poison misting endgame enemies down to 1 HP without even needing to hit them, then oneshotting them after. But it means nothing because priest is the best lmao holy symbol.
at which point you slowly but steadily become a solid first job class in your mid 20s.
Relatable.
playing grindan games
why
Misting
Will there even be good maps to mist on a classic server? Feels like all of the broken areas are non-GMS or added way later into the game
Because putting in effort to achieve something is fun.
Imagine if the same thing was possible in reality.
It depends on the update schedule, honestly. If they keep updates relatively on par with the no-life ppl2pass grinders, then your average person will likely hit third job just in time for some good endgame maps like Leafre, Temple of Time, pick your >poison. Of course they could also be cunts and nerf poison mist and piss off every F/P mage in existence, that'd be funny.
Also if they slow roll updates and nothing is good when people are hitting F/P, then uhh...get fucked.
you have to spam slash blast and power strike until 4th job, actually. charged blow removes your charge until a secondary 4th job skill as well, so its only usage in 3rd job is if you already have to rebuff so you just get in a last hit before you do so. Been playing paladin in Maple Legends PS and it's fucking rough because I didn't leech for that OG experience.
Legends is such a nigger server but nice to use as a pretend-singleplayer sandbox
Yeah, it's pretty bad. 5 INT gave significantly more benefit than 5 Magic Attack, so going pure INT, even if you stuck with a Wooden Wand and no other INT/MA, would outperform any normal LUK mage using high level equipment. There was zero reason to use LUK at all. The Elemental Wands were just a spit on the grave.
I like online games where you get to see the variety in everyone's progress in real time. I guess it's not so much like that nowadays but back then people struggled to get what they had and it ended up in some odd looking characters and a really wide range of active players. High lvs with shit equips but they were dedicated, low or mid levels with some pretty good stuff because they were a high IQ merchant, a scammer, a drop gamer, a whale, funded an alt from their main, etc. Then you'd have the rare high level that also has godly gear and it was cool to see.
High lvs with shit equips but they were dedicated
That's how FangBlade got by. He didn't give a shit about minmaxing equipment. One of his guildies spent a half hour trying to convince him to take a purple surfboard from him.
back then people struggled to get what they had
I really, REALLY miss this. Nowadays everyone just follows a guide to do the most damage and pays for cosmetics to not look like a clown.
The reason to have LUK was to have access to better looking armors than a filthy pleb bathrobe.
better looking armors
That's what NX was for, you peasant.
I was misting Squids/Deep Ludi back in the day, but that requires either one to be released.
implying you didn't like the zakum/bathrobe/snowshoe/wg/kandayo look
He will be kino
If deep aquaroad came out the same time as normal aqua then that'll be pretty early on ig.
Can't remember when plapapaus (cant spell) got released though
Tons of people were like that back then, and the funny thing is a lot of them had absolute dogshit stat distribution, especially many thieves and warriors. Still they struggled on and persisted. Very interesting times for sure, very interesting looking characters. Something about old maple gear and the lack of cosmetic overload added to the soul. It made frankenstein gear sets look kind of cool since most of it actually looked pretty good for the art style. People weren't permanently henehoe'd up like they are today.
I distinctly remember bombing Goby houses around the time people were being mass banned for abusing Bigfoot.
I don't know why I remember that.
I thought the "funded look" old maple whales used to have was so fucking cool even how it changed over the years, they'd always be wearing some random rare shit like the stirge gear or the waterworks cape, raccoon masks and smiley masks. Unironically gave the game a lot of personality.
Meso bombing goby houses
I hope Nexon aren't niggers like amazon or most other modern MMO publishers so I can roleplay a muslim bandit character
You can buy turbans in the cash shop. I think you'll be fine.
The real test is will I get janny'd when I start screaming Allah akbar and death to the land thieves (or have them as my macro shouts if those will be in game)
No cygus no buy
Cygnus was a mistake.
literally just adventurers but with privileges (better, more flashy skills, 4th job skills starting from 70)
the very beginning of link skill cancer
I'll pass.
I'll pass.
accidentally typed text twice
that's how much I dislike Cygnus
CWPlayer12 pretending to be old school by spamming "JPQ I HAVE TRACK"
so fucking soulless
old school GMS was shit, I played it for the artstyle and music, not for the grindy gameplay and shitty P2W mechanics. I already play private servers for my nostalgia fix and because it's faster so Nexon has to offer something better than higher rates and vote NX to make the Classic World worth it. my only suggestions would be everything pre Alliance classes and content included at launch or just let me pick and choose each and every skill of every class's history, Original Bucc was good but Sair only became fun after Mutiny.
don't forget cygnus was the start of separating cash shop inventories so you couldn't share between them and explorers. gayest thing nexon ever did
