This is a problem I thought Halo Infinite actually unironically solved very well. The fact that you can storm all those mini-bases with vehicles of your choosing, outfitted with marines who all have power weapons of your choosing, did a lot to breathe life into the open world sidequests. It turned all those >go kill this miniboss into maximally optimized assassinations where you could scope the terrain and equipment in advance and use it to craft the perfect death squad. I haven't had so much fun with the NPC marines since building squads of aimbot snipers in Halo 2.

I will never get tired of wathogs full of snipers. I drive, my marines are there to shoot. If I'm playing on Legendary and we're assaulting a fortress with roided up gold elite or brute chieftain spawns, those NPC snipers are required to stay alive because the game assumes you'll bring them. I never realized how much I missed that from Halo 2 until they brought it back for Infinite. In every game between 2 and Infinite, your marine allies did not matter whatsoever, and it breathes so much soul into the gameplay when they do.

They kill shit, and having a handful of AI warthogs zooming past you as you're trucking along in a tank wrecking shit is peak fucking Halo. Infinite cannot capture even a tenth of the feeling. It can't even capture Halo 2's, you don't even get anything like the fucking bridge sequence, or the fun little situation when you encounter the gauss hog for the first time.
