It's impossible to compete with what the community has been doing for 30 years. Doom is one of those situations where devs need to do something new, since the original experience has already been reimagined, polished, rewritten so many times that there is simply no room for the brand owners to release anything within that same space. They need to take advantage of the power of the brand, but they also need to invent something totally new with it.
This explains why the Japanese are so averse to mods, by the way. They hate the idea of the niche they've created for a franchise being completely exploited for unprofitable purposes, leaving the original owners with no space to compete within and make money.

I really enjoyed what they did and how they approached the story in 2016. The whole thing was still Doom but had a half-life and metroid atmosphere to it.

The UAC facility and Hayden were cool asf but then they did all this bullshit where they retconned everything for the new direction, made Hayden some god in disguise that actually hated argent energy but secretly had to act like he liked and become a human and then a robot and then...
