It's not a Sega thing, he would write the same exact way in the comics. Hell, he's done the "reference a random line from a previous game" bit just recently in the DC crossover he wrote.

sure, for the dialogue this is true. i'm talking about general writing though. my point is that this whole thing of sonic sucking his own thumb has been a thing since generations, a game which ian flynn wasn't even close to working on. the games have since kept appealing to nostalgia with forces, frontiers, mania and now the new kart game. blame the execs who everytime they try something new (like boom or lost world) and it bombs they feel like we have to go back.

After the whole archie debacle and sega started enforcing stricter mandates to protect the brand he just lost half his brain, the archie comic writing quality fucking plunged it wasn't even funny, you put it together with the interminable arcs, the issues where nothing happened, the crossovers that no one asked for, the characters reduced to just talking about their personalities and making references, it's astonishing to me that he was even allowed to not only carry on to the idw comic, but eventually make it to writing for official Sega content.

And he's still a lousy writer, by the way. IDW sonic's plots consist of nothing happening, characters achieving nothing, and anything that happens is instantly reversed/solved in 2 pages, there's so much padding with characters spouting exposition and talking about themselves it shocks me how anyone could like these comics.

And don't say it is because you want to fuck the girls because only 2 artists working for IDW actually draw the girls sexy (something sega is actively trying to curb, too)

as far as I know it's only a tie-in figure exclusive to certain regions to promote the idw comic/mobile runner game, I find it depressing that people parade this as being proof that the ragtag band of sonic fans like ian flynn, tyson hesse and other folks finally "made it" and can make sonic great again in spite of sega, because I'm pretty sure that as soon as sega finds someone else that's better or idw drops the sonic license, or sega of america fucks up again and gets castrated by sega of japan again, all the idw content/pandering is going to evaporate and fans will just be at a loss again.
