It never was. Brain computer interface was always the goal. VR has always been a meme, it hasn't changed since the 90s.

I would argue that it is affordable now due to headsets like the quest existing but the major thing holding back vr is the games being limited in scope due to the weak hardware of the quest headset. its happened to literally every good vr game, once they add quest support, features and graphics get removed or toned down in order to make sure the games don't crash on quest.

But even when some developers work within these limitations, the games they put out are usually nothing more than tech demos. Even half-life Alyx had this problem. we're really in a fucked place where vr is getting more popular but the games suck.

VR vidya has a chicken and egg problem.
As far as consumers go, the hardware is too expensive of an investment (not just the headset, but the entire setup) for the lack of killer apps to drive sales. And basically no good games are getting made because people good at making games are looking at VR installbases and deciding to not bother developing for a fringe market or for relatively underpowered hardware. And becuase of that many consumers are passing up on the hardware that has no gaems, a story same as it ever was.
It's kind of fucked unless some absolute savant both covers hardware and software side in a convenient manner that moves units on a scale that revolutionizes the concept instead of being a roundabout way to pay hundreds of dollars for a singular game with the vague hope that someone else makes a good game so your investment in hardware means more than just 1 title to play. But with the way that the general industry is going that's not realistic so it's going to stay in the realm of autism and tech demos for the foreseeable future.
like motion controls it's a gimmick, but you gotta have some games under your belt for people to really consider it

I still think it could be. Right now it's on its own weird trajectory where it's isolated from the mainstream gaming audience, like mobile games. But kids really seem to like it. Maybe they all grow up and become a huge force in the market.
Alternatively, if Valve makes good on the plan for a true monitor replacement headset, that might be the foot in the door needed to draw in the traditional gaming audience.

I wish I could help you there. I originally looked up a tutorial on YT and it had a link for everything you needed there, but the guy removed it and replaced it with his discord link. Keep at it though, it's worth it. While trying to find it just now, I skimmed through a tutorial vid by a guy named Americana Ninja and it looks like there's a fuck ton of modded campaigns you can play, so I might give those a shot soon
