I replayed UT today but I'm a bit deaf now. I should've worn my hearing aid but it made me realize the music hard carries Toby's vision. There's no real emotional sting in the game until you make it to Asgore's castle and the "Undertale" theme that plays while the monsters tell you what happened to The First Human is what makes it work.

Deltarune still works i think because the themes are a bit more... relatable? Hearing Big Shot is awesome but Spamton still works without music because his dialogue is fucking ominous.

All of this really just depends on how dark the story is actually going to get, which we still don't know. Is Gaster going to be a true villain? Is there some other, third presence? Is Toby insane enough to put a rape in his game about funny animals? Deltarune doesn't necessarily run on the same rules Undertale does. Monster Lighterners are seemingly incapable of magic and people don't seem to regard Kris as some ticking bomb. A war between humanity and monster kind would presumbably be far fairer, but I like to think monsters happened to be technologically advanced, compensating for whatever strength humanity had. They forced the humans underground, building a mechanical gate to lock them there (as a parallel to the magical barrier in Undertale). Perhaps the war was so long ago both humanity and monster kind just forgot about it, and the gate just naturally degraded throughout the eons without underground humanity really forcing themselves out.

The existence of the "How to Care for a Human" book implies that Kris's situation isn't unique and there must be at least some other humans out there in monster society. Kris is an anomaly in Hometown, but as far as we know nobody ever treated them as something extraordinary. Monster society and culture seems to be familiar and comfortable with humans in general, in contrast to Undertale where most monsters seemed to not even know what a human looked like, and they certainly don't seem to think humans are particularly dangerous.
All that said, if there is a human society out there it doesn't seem to be integrated with the monster one. Kris's reaction to seeing pictures of other humans can be attributed to their complex feelings about "being different," but it also implies they're not used to seeing other humans at all, as you might expect if humans were regularly featured on TV or in movies (which granted they don't seem to watch) or other media or in their studies. Humans aren't unknown to monsters but they certainly seem to be rare. They weren't completely eradicated like monsters were in Undertale, but humans are either much rarer in the world for some reason or most humans must live in some other faraway place with little contact with monster society. Or maybe this is all reading a little too deeply into one weird kid in a small town.
