ITT: Good video game music that a lot of people don't know about
exter sugar exter salt exter msg
given how many kids are around now I half wonder if something as massive as the OG mortal kombat theme now qualifies.
youtube.com
Well this song actually wasn't in any of the video games. It was made for the movies.
pee pee poo poo all the good ones have already been posted since time immemorial. you missed out on good shit since nobody ever posts anything new (and good).
which is why it was fucking sick when they finally acknowledged it
youtu.be
were the decent boss music themes from ff14 covered?
I can't speak for the game itself but they came out as early as a realm reborn with some of the music
here is titans phases

For me it's Locus

titan was what originally got me interested in playing more of the shitty game.
a long time favorite was ultima
youtube.com
I almost picked up XIV but it had a monthly fee and then I found out I could just play shitty games with banger music for free instead.
youtube.com
very understandable.
it has a VERY fucking good story, ignoring the newest expansion, but I cannot recommend the game to people because of everything else.
You can play the Free Trial up to the Shadowbringers expansion.Unfortunately a lot of the meme-worthy tracks come after that cut off point but there are definitely a number of amazing tracks on the way there.
I love finding alternative versions and arrangements from secondary material. Especially Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts are fun in that regard.

A lot of random JRPGs I've played over the years have cool alternate versions on official soundtrack CDs. Maybe it's just a Japan thing in general, but it's odd to think there's all these amazing arrangements that a ton of people haven't heard because they only played the game. (If they even did that, cause I feel like the last one is pretty obscure.)

I think Konami has the best game musicians.
Just played this game for the first time a couple minutes ago and heard this kino:

I've probably heard this more than any of the actual OST of mortal kombat.
most obscure thing i have on hand.

speaking of arrangements: the Nier games have some interesting ones

The Even More Incredible Machine on PC and I guess 3DO. This was an important game in 4th grade, on par with SC2K in schooltime notoriety, and I played the shit out of it at home too. Never see it mentioned here. I only played this TIM, but it has an amazing and diverse soundtrack filled with soul, that is the amount of effort to make each track a genuine interpretation of each particular style/genre is truly underrated. I enjoyed it immensely as a kid and appreciate the effort even more now. An educational puzzle game for kids really had no business having a soundtrack this commendable. Probably in my top 4 OST beside Outrun 2, Sim City 4 and Tetrisphere
I love how the newer game sampled the original tracks in its OST
youtu.be
The actual OST of Mortal Kombat is kinda garbage. They shoulda just had those guys make the in game soundtrack too.
MK3 music is pretty great though.
honestly, yeah
I can't for the life of me remember any MK music
none of the last 20 years at least lmao
What are some good songs from Tetrisphere? I remember playing that briefly as a kid but I don't remember the music at all
mix of FF and Nier themes in sidecontent in an mmo

Vidya music is a good source of rare boy choir bangers.
I love Keiichi Okabe since he uses them a lot in his songs, but it's hard to find them in the credits...

Also, honourable mention.

Ace Combat might be up your alley too if you're into choir boys.

Pandemonium had some great fucking tracks
I'm glad that at least the raids are still worth it for the music

Original video game songs don't get much love in general.

Apparently one of those only just got a translation a few years ago, and the other one doesn't have one at all, so I'm not too surprised they're overlooked between the multiple layers of having to know Japanese, having to play old PS1 games, and having to beat the game to hear what I presume is the credits music for those games, because otherwise the only way you come across this is if you're listening to soundtracks from video games you haven't played on youtube. But they are good, don't get me wrong.
There's something fucked up about music you can "miss" because you play the game (too well)
like, stealth games that have great combat music or battle tracks that take (too) long to get to the juicy bits
youtu.be

game has a track that plays only at one specific moment
if you leave the room/zone for any reason (to go back and save for example) it stops and never plays again
shit
Rare unused OST that had to be data-mined from the game files.
track can only be found in a web browser event
unused music is a fucking trap because it can either be shit that was axed for good reasons or hidden gems

for me its Compliant Confuse and Phony, but they are all good if you are into acid trance

what I presume is the credits music for those games
You'd presume right.
I guess you're right about everything else too. I've played and beaten both those games myself but I'm sure there are some eccentric people out there blasting random OSTs.
There's also the problem of how difficult it is to find some of this stuff of YouTube even if you do know it.

fucking shame lmao
I will always shill Ar tonelico in these threads because I love everything about those games, but basically anything that comes out of Gust has amazing music

I was bummed out that the best part of the FF16 reveal trailer wasn't even in the game

so when it came back, I came as well

Actually Genshin uses cool tech where the battle music just picks up where it left off the next time you get in a battle so it's easier to hear the full version of the battle themes in game than you might expect, especially when you're zooming around Ochkanatlan farming materials like I was.
there must be some timer outside of combat that lets the combat music continue if you re-enter music in said timeframe, I must have missed that timeframe several times because the first time I heard the track in full I was like "wtf"
I can't think of an example that works exactly like how you described it, but this amazing song plays in one single cutscene relatively early in a 90 hour game, and never again.
youtube.com
They also added a second cutscene where it plays in the remastered version on Switch, but that's it.
It's cool but at the same time
running around grabbing ascension mats
some jackoff 2 miles away spots you
battle music starts
just trying to gather shit, don't want to hear this obnoxious crap over and over
still plays even when you're as far as can be
have to teleport to make it stop
Wish they'd create technology to disable only the battle music.
To keep on topic. I'm sure there are hundreds of gacha games that went out of service that have decent music.
Like this kickass battle theme remix of the Daytona USA theme
youtu.be
We'll probably never know all of them because the Japs don't like to save anything for some reason.
And also this one from the same gacha.
youtu.be
Fucking hell
*re-enter combat
also I have a soft spot for the genshin battle theme and love that the motif carries through all of the nations
youtu.be
fuck yeah, I knew which track it was immediately
also the 3DS version got some musical vids with nice arrangements
youtu.be
best battle theme in the game plays in one limited event
if you missed it you'll never hear it
Wish they'd create technology to disable only the battle music.
FF14 lets you do that because some of the overworld battle themes are... weird
youtu.be
In contrast, I love the battle themes in Endwalker and Dawntrail
youtu.be
youtu.be
I love the game but the sheer amount of fomo shit you can miss is staggering
and it's even worse if it's Mondstadt because I love its flair
weird
What are you saying? That was pretty sick.
I love when game music gets freaky
youtu.be
I give myself peace of mind by telling myself that if the game is worth playing at all they'll make an offline version that can be played after EoS. Which I'm reading they did for this one but unfortunately it's just a story viewer and they additionally seem to have fucked it up in a particularly unique way because they pulled some "ending of Nier 1" shit. So that's a shame. Not that I ever would have played it, but lost media does frustrate me. Still, even in cases where they don't make any form of offline version, the music is probably still saved somewhere because people rip the soundtracks for pretty much everything.
kek, I guess "jarring" would the better word. It definitely stands out between the other expansion battle tracks.
also what the heck, that's neat
Yeah it's kinda crazy to me how much permanently missable shit they've stuck into events and then those events have never ever had reruns. Not just battle themes and locations but sometimes even important story developments happen in one-time events. In HSR they avoided this problem by making events permanently available and the only thing that's limited time is the rewards, so it surprises me that in 5 years they've never done this for Genshin Impact.
MAKE ROOM, BITCHES

My only experience hearing FFXIV's music was through the 3DS Theatrhyrhm but even there it was all over the place. Rock, classical, metal, and anime opening songs. So I figured a huge MMO just has a lot of variety. I remember liking this one a lot.
youtu.be
also what the heck, that's neat
The whole soundtrack is good and so is the game itself. Highly recommended.
youtu.be
I initially got put off by 14's seemingly chaotic soundtrack because I was used to more "cohesive" selection of music in muh mmos but the sheer variety of music is definitely one of 14's strengths
and I was a bit disappointed when 16 didn't do much in that regard but I think the composer himself felt the same way
comfy time
youtube.com
if the game is worth playing they'll make an offline version
That's a good way to deal with it. It's also not as if all regular games with good music are worth playing.
Didn't know they made an offline version of 404 though. The story didn't even really go anywhere. It was just jumping from alternate world to alternate world with no significant developments. Gameplay was actually okay though only because it's not possible to fuck up a shmup. The girls were all very cute at least, if you're into downloading it just for them.
In the end I guess it's best not to think about all the games lost to time.
ending of Nier 1
Like, it deletes your save file?
the music is probably still saved somewhere
I hope so. Aside from art, it is the easiest thing to rip and upload.
Don't know anything about this game other than it has cool music
youtube.com
I haven't paid any attention to mainline Final Fantasy since XII. But if it's Final Fantasy I'm sure XVI's music was at least decent even if it disappointed you.
NTA but FFXVI's is just not very interesting, which is funny because upon release I loved it, but it's really just one of those soundtracks that only works in real time with the game, listening to it out of context it's all a bit weak
