The best normal explanation I can come up with is that these enemies are designed to fuck with you and the in-battle narration is just wrong, Kris is calling Check useless because it won't give any useful information and the game instructs you to use Pacify because it leads to a fake-out end of battle (which is why the You Won! screen doesn't mention any reward)

I think he may outright not fw Lightners outside the prophecy, maybe because they're a liability. If it's really so easy for any Lightner to open a dark world, it's also a huge OpSec problem for him to have any Lightners aware of him if he's trying to limit the spread of fountains.

The only real reason I can come up with for why Alphys would be the Knight is that she's trying to use the Dark Worlds to better her students. It would explain why she's so permissive with Susie and Kris, and why she'll send them together despite knowing Susie's issues. Still, a Lightner who's aware enough to create Dark Fountains should be aware of the Roaring and I don't think even Alphys is arrogant enough to try it.

Putting aside whatever dogshit is actually happening here, I quite enjoy the concept of Gaster and Dess being victims of a similar circumstance and Gaster acting as a sort of godfather for her in the schizo world while he works on a way to try to fix everything for them. I doubt the game will pan out that way tho, I'm guessing Dess is trapped alone in the code.
