Recently i went through every DMC and 5 is by far the best one, but DMC (the prequel) is a close 2nd. First one was actually pretty good all things considered, 2 and 3 were downgrades (2 was straight up garbage). I hated the secret missions of DMC 4 which puts it in the garbage as well. I don't get the impression you really thought about what you played if you walked away thinking DmC was better than 1, 3 or 4. It goes backwards in too many respects gameplay wise for it to be considered worth anyone's time, and that's not even counting the story, which is bad enough to throw the whole thing out. The controls are one of the worst offenders, never mind the lack of lock-on which severely limits your moveset, you're given two dodges, taking up space on the controller for essentially no reason. There is no excuse for not having a singular dodge button and moving DT from L3+R3 to the left bumper which was a really awkward place to put something you're going to be using a lot if you want to do any real damage. Your weapons requiring you to hold down on the triggers is such a bizarre idea, especially when the actual DMC games don't require that for you to change weapons. It also completely lacks taunts to gain more DT and also add characterization to Dante, something that was sorely needed since the game makes him out to be a complete loser. There's also the enemy roster being forgettable, at most I can remember the flying babies but the games enemy design lacks a lot of distinguishing or notable features that hurt the games' memorability, what we have instead is color coded enemies stopping you from doing anything cool and hard limiting your already limited weapon pool, which is antithetical to Devil May Cry and felt like they were just trying to justify the angel/devil split which ended up being completely pointless. The bosses themselves were exceedingly boring and felt less like challenging your abilities and more like poorly created set-pieces. They're largely forgettable. I know most people look at Bob, but he isn't engaging, you just hit three switches every once in a while and wail on him. The game just doesn't have anything going for it and is the biggest failure of the Inafune era.
Funnily enough, in terms of story and presentation i found 5 to be the weakest after i did the same.
Its got some cool moments but overall it just feels like theres barely anything of note about the whole picture.
I also dont really like how they ramped up the clownfactor on dante after 2. He was a fun but quite serious guy in 1.. however its not as bad as retarded memelords keeps painting him, holy shit fuck off with your deadpoolwank, hes not like that even in 5.

Reminder that there's only two types of enemies that have color coded (out of more than a dozen) variants and they don't even work the same.
You can probably count the amount of times you'll fight color coded enemies on a first playthrough on one hand.
Not that it's a particularly good mechanic, but it's rarely a problem (specially once you unlock the second weapon for each type and combo swap) and, most importantly, it's not something new to the franchise.
Shadow, Bloodgoyle, Blitz all limited you to guns, they're much more common (and often way stronger) than the DmC color coded enemies, and yet Shadow is regarded as one of the best enemies in the series.

It could easily be the Savior, since they obviously didn't know what it was going to be like at that point. The did the exact same thing in the early drafts of 5 where V looked just like Vergil and Urizen looked like NA while SDT Dante just had Sparda's design. I wouldn't base much on something so early, it was very clear at this point they had Nero and The Order in mind already so I doubt there would also be room to bring Vergil back. Let alone the way it was done in 5.

DMC3 HD has all the mods and some of the costumes change your taunts to the ones from the demo version but you can't juggle the loading screens anymore like on PS2 so maybe its worse idk

Honestly? It makes sense. When Dante sends Yamato to Nero, the boy has no other weapons but in the next mission you see all of his weapons have returned. I'm not trying to think too much about it since DMC operates on "rule of cool" but the fight happening with only Yamato would've been more symbolic (and maybe add a new weapon to use in gameplay).
That looks like Nero Angelo leading some copycats not the empty armors that we got at the end. Vergil leading an army of demons was a thing first introduced in DMC 2 prequel novel so that doesn't really surprise me.

I'm not being reductive, that's the plot. Any problems are solved within ten minutes of occurrence, usually with some DBZ bullshit power boost.
I think that their original idea was for Nero to forgo his gun and sword and use Vergil's moveset in DT, sort of like how corrupt Vergil plays in 3SE; but once they had the outline for Red Queen (which they mention was the moment they really figured out the character) that stopped making sense since it would've removed a huge aspect of the character, so they settled on a middle ground with the stand DT.
In situation a final boss with just Yamato/DT would make sense since it happens a couple times in the other games. But that's kinda reaching.

I unironically keep faust equipped even though it's holy water cheat code instead of a real 4th gun because it gives dante a cool scarf and the few enemies that actually want long range combat you just use KC lightning moves instead for better dps/stun/style
