You should have 3 crafting islanders with you at all times to raise their affection faster. Some of them don't talk as much or have more pleasant voices/voicelines. Combat islanders are a meme because the game is already easy as piss, and gathering islanders like you said are just annoying sometimes, but crafting ones make life so much better.

painting can make "extra materials" called stickers and appliques - or you can buy them from marco eventually
all crafting lives have a skill that lets you use "extra materials" when crafting
each sticker/applique makes X category of skills more likely to roll

I did for my woodcutter, but axe are easy because of Kunugi gave me carpenter buff.
Mimic is too much RNG and hassle to do.
