It can be made way, way more engaging with simple mods like Farmer's Delight which add a ton of new plants, recipes and buffs from food that requires more effort to produce. As it is, you just walk into a village, steal all their hay and just keep up with the 'annoyance meter' for the rest of your playthrough via 2 stacks of bread.
